I recently test drove a JD4320 (150 hours on it) and was surprised at the noise level of the engine, very noisy in my opinion. Compared to my caseih d40. I only ran it for about 15 minutes, do the quiet down as they get warmer? I suppose you get use to it.

The noise does not go down that much. extended use I use muffs. The one I tried that had a vertical exhaust made mine seem quiet. I don't know the HP of the d40 but the 50+ of my 4520 does make noise. The yanmar engine in the 3000 series is quieter.

Yep, noise level is high on my 4520 as compared to neighbor's similiarly-sized but different-brand tractors...

Virtually anything from a lawnmower on up requires hearing protection - unless you have a cab. I wear earmuffs whenever I use my tractor more than 2-3 minutes. JDs do seem to be on the noisy side, but hearing protection is needed for virtually any brand if you have a non-cab tractor.

My 4720 is loud. I leave a pair of ear muffs on the ROPS. I use them pretty much every minute I am on the tractor. The Yanmars are much quieter.

One thing about the turbo-charged powertech in the 4000 series is that it is loud at idle compared to many other engines, but it does not get too much louder at higher rpms's. I can operate my 4120 at pto speed without ear-protection, but the old Ford 2000 diesel it replaced was unbearable at high rpm's and ear protection was a must with that one. When you are comparing other engines on dealers lots, crank them up to pto speed since this is where the tractor will do much of its work. You will find that there are many engines out there that are a lot louder than these at higher rpm's.

I took a 4120 for a spin around a dealer's lot, and indeed it was a bit noisier than the 3520 I settled on. Even so if you plan to use any of these for longer than a few minutes, you should be wearing some form of hearing protection.

Chronic exposure to moderate noise can cause significant hearing loss, just like acute exposure to loud/very loud noise. IMO it's definitely worth it to use hearing protection whenever operating equipment that makes any sort of significant noise, unless you're isolated from the noise (cab, etc). Particularly since once hearing is gone, you really can't get it back, at least with current technology.

Huh?

Say again?

Oh, fine, thank you.

Yeah, it's loud. I can drown out the Harleys rippin' down my road. They don't get quieter as they warm up, either. Eventually I won't notice 'cause I'll be stone deaf. Get hearing protection, or in my case, get more hp than you need so you can run the engine under 1800 rpm or so. That isn't something I planned to do but it generally works out.

They are loud tractors. My 3720 sounds like a kitten compared to the 4520 I had. I like the four cylinder drone, though. If it is loud, it might as well sound good.

Yep, my 3120 is a lot quieter than my buddy's 4120.
