As most of you know, I traded a 4400 for a 4520 with just over 2000 hours on it.

You folks with the older 4x20 machines (mine is a 2005 model), do the Deere engines use much oil between changes? The Yanmar engines (like in my 4400, previous 790 and 670) never consumed any oil between annual changes (figure 100-120 hours).

Also, how many hours do you expect to get out of the Deere built engine?

I have 600 hours on mine, and I noticed that mine used a little oil on the last change. It was down from the full mark on the dipstick maybe 1/8 inch. I'm not sure what that translates into in actual oil volume. That was over the course of 230 hours. The oil was 0-40 JD synthetic, so I think that was a factor since it didn't do it on the last change, which was 5-40 Amsoil. I'm thinking the 0-40 is a little more slippery.
Based on my conversations with the local dealer service manager, it seems that 8-10K hours is common place for skid loaders with the same powertech engine.

Roy My JD 4320 2006 model has 1180 hrs, I think in some previous post I said 1225 Hrs. With that out of the way I have always used the JD oil 15-40/ Plus 50 -II. I only put maybe 75 Hrs per change. Maybe 2 cups which is a guess, between changes. I do have some weepage / drip occasionally from the pvc hose. If I went the full 200 hrs as recommended I would probably see more oil usage. Maybe this will be interesting. Weep ( damp ) seep ( wet looking and an occasional drop) and leak ( drops of fluid ). Engineering terms for fluid loss. A little to a lot. Just thought I would throw that out there. How is that new tractor running. Nice uh. Later.

When I researched the 4024T and it's bigger brother the 5030T, the "mean time before failure" for them was 8,000hrs. Of course, the oil consumption and overall engine performance could be less than optimal before "failure", too.

Nonetheless, for most of us the useful life of these engines is more than enough for our "careers"!

My 4120 I change it every 100, 15W 40, I have never had to add between changes so no noticeable drop on the dipstick.

Very easy to change too, 5 gallon bucket will fit right under it and then you slide it over just a hair and catch what falls out from the filter.

I have a 4320 bought new in 2010 and it now has about 650 hours on it. Always change oil and filter each year with approx 100 hrs on the oil. Oil level is very close to the FULL mark on the dip stick each time when oil is drained and filled with JD 15-40 Plus 50-II oil. So, oil use is practically zero. No leaks, maybe a drop once in a while out the breather pipe (vinyl tube) but that is negligible. Tractor will outlast me at the rate it's used.

Maybe send a oil sample in to see how its wearing.

I have about 900 hrs on my 2009 4520 and 1200 hours on my 2005 110. Have not seen any noticeable oil consumption so far. I like using my tractors, that said I hope the tractors and my self can all wear out at the same time.

I have more than 1300 hours on a 5420 purchased 2008 and never have a oil low level problem. keep the changes as scheduled same with hydraulic fluids. Problem everything else is beginning to show up tires tread soon gone and so need replacing the FEL is loose and replacement bushings would be as expensive and replacement of loader. Seat soon will have more yellow duct tape than original material.
The plastic hood and fenders are a surprise have held up good (No rust). And glad never used the Roll over bar.

Soon tax account will suggest to get newer for proration costs.

My 2004, 4120 is going on 1000 hours and does not use any oil between 100 hour changes. I use 15W-40 non-synthetic from TSC, either their store-brand, or Pensoil. I use a block heater for 1/2 hour to 2 hours prior to every winter start depending on how cold it is outside. The only maintenance issue I had from that tractor was a starter failure due to corrosion (original Bosh unit) in 2007, just after the warranty expired. JD wanted over $300 for a factory replacement (?), but I found an aftermarket (powerstrike) on amazon for about $100 and it has started like a champ every time since installation. When I get too bored, I will do a quick cleanup of the corrosion issue on the original starter just for a back-up if the "cheap" replacement ever fails me. A fool and his money are soon parted is my favorite saying.
