The 4x4 engagement pawls on any tractor are not designed to slip in or out easily while under torque. Otherwise they may be prone to jump out of gear when you need them to be engaged.
Just don't try to shift when there is a load on the gears. Pushing in the clutch while I'm shifting does the trick for me. Just like shifting "through" the gears.
