4x4 not working 2001 tc40da

I'm digging a pond.
A few times I got on pretty uneven terrain.
Now my 4X4 will not work. I can turn the front wheels and they spin in opposite directions when the front end is off the ground. When I rotate the drive shaft the front wheels turn. When I have the 4x4 lock in place I do not hear any grinding.
Anyone got any ideas? Or a service manual on CD? this looks like it maybe an expensive fix.

after looking at it further, I noticed that the shifter controls a pull cable with a spring in-line. This cable runs to the front "gear" box with a lever on it. This lever is not moving to engage the FWD system. I tried turning the tires and gently tapping that lever to engage the system but it wouldn't budge.

Bob,

I think that spring-controlled lever is your "sensitrak" FWD that is controlled by the lever on your left side near your transmission range lever (if yours is the same setup as mine). Have you pulled up on the lever that is located in the back left of the driver's compartment (behind the seat)? That should lock in all four. My sensitrak doesn't work consistently either.

Ok my bad!
There is a second lever that sits behind the seat on the left. This lever has to be pulled up for the FWD to work. I don't know if it is a supersteer thing or not. Mine has TWO levers to make the FWD.
I had never even seen that second lever before today.
