5.8 Earthquake just hit Virginia

The center of the quake was in between Charlottsvile and Richmond. CNN says buildings shook in VA, DC, and NY and Ohio. We did not feel anything in the Winchester area. I understand that BobRip lives in the area where the center of the quake occurred. Bob, I hope you made it through this okay. Let us know.

We felt it in Emmitsburg - Just south of the MD/PA line. No damage - just four seconds of very mild shaking. It is definitely all the buzz.

The news says it was only about 4 miles deep and that is why the quake was felt so far away ... reports are it was felt in Ohio.

for the uneducated - is '4 miles deep' deep or pretty shallow?

A seismologist interviewed on CNN stated that it was very shallow. Deeper quakes have much absorption of the shock wave before it reaches the surface. A shallow quake causes more vibration near the surface and is felt at a greater distance.

Six of us were having lunch in Wrentham , Massachusetts at the farm. The glass pendants guarding the picture window from bird strikes were swinging enough to sound like a bell. All our drinks swayed as did we all. No damage. I checked the chimneys through binoculars. Just now I am thinking of all the bridges I drove over later to get home.

My brother in law called about 30 minutes ago and said they felt the shaking pretty hard, he lives near Bealton Va.

That wasn't an earthquake...... the national debt created such a large vacuum in the national reserve/treasury that the vacuum collapsed upon itself....... just felt like an earthquake

Anyway, I was at the top of a 12' ladder at work. Needless to say, I got down in a hurry... The buildings were swaying and creaking pretty crazy here in northern MD. Weird though, other guys on the ground said they couldn't feel any shaking, just see the buildings swaying.

I felt it ever so slightly in New Hampshire. Thought someone was doing some blasting until a friend called and told me it was an earthquake.
