Havent really looked at the deck yet, once i get this tractor done, then its coming out. I found a V Belt for it amd searched the number, which comes up for a 50" deck. Not sure if it is a 50 but if it is, are they good decks? What are the pros and cons on them? Just want a general idea of what i might be getting into.....
Thanks

Not sure what model of 50" deck you refer to but I have an '89 JD 318 with the 50" deck. After about 700 mowing hours I had to pay for 3 new spindle bearings, the OEM ones AND the replacments did not have grease fittings which is why the OEM's wore out quicker than they should have. Other than that, my deck served me well.

I just helped my neighbor rebuild his and its one of the heaviest built decks I have seen other than my Kubota.

Definetly worth rebuilding if needed.

I have a 50" on my 316. Great deck. One thing I would do though, is put the speed up pulley on it to get those blades turning a little faster.

I don't understand the grease fitting deal. These bearings are sealed. They don't need grease fittings. My spindles never had any grease fittings.

Normally these bearings have a 500 hour life span,so anything over that is a big bonus. I didn't have to change mine until 980 hours.

My 4210 7-Iron deck HAS grease fittings and is still mowing strong at at least 750 hours of operation. It cost me about $140 parts and labor to get new bearings put on my 50 inch deck and they would have lasted MUCH longer had they had grease fittings.

I agree ^^ I have the 50 on my 318...its fine when the grass isnt that high or thick...but once you get into some high stuff it doesnt cut so nice...even with the blades sharp as a razor and running WOT.

Not talking about a 7-Iron. It's an old 50" deck off a 300 series right? How long do you want it to last anyway. 700 hours is pretty darn good IMO.:) Like I stated earlier I didn't have to do anything until after almost 1000 hours, AND NO GREASE FITTINGS.:)
