I'm coming up on the 50 hour mark on my MF 1428 Hydro. Is there value in having the dealer do the service? Will they catch stuff outside of the fluid change? I don't want to be penny wise and dollar foolish.

You should have a list of items do to in your owners manual.

As far as what the dealer will do, he will do the list.

When doing the service look over the tractor, look at the fasteners to make sure that they are tight. Look for any drips or leaks. Check the hydraulic connections.

In my modest opinion, an owner will do a better job than a shop as they will take more time to look the tractor over. A shop runs on money and they do not have the time to look for things that are not on the list.

My 50 hour service was just to change the engine oil, check bolt torques and fluid levels. I did that myself...
My tractor is a gear machine, so the manual doesn't specify changing the hydraulic fluid.

However, I'm rapidly approaching 100 hours and, although the manual calls out for a 200 hour interval, I'm going to replace the hydraulic fluid. The only reason I'd even consider the dealer doing this job is the fluid capacity. I'm not sure where I can dispose of 5-6 gallons of hydraulic fluid...also, I do not have a pan large enough for that much fluid.

I did mine. The 4010 even requires removal of one rear wheel to extract the 3 pt bar that runs in front of the hydraulic filter cover. Even that wasn't much: floor jack underneath drawbar to lift, impact wrench on wheel bolts, roll wheel back and prop, don't lay down. Did the 3 oils at different times to not get overloaded with waste oil: 1) engine oil and filter, 2) front gear oil, 3) hydraulic oil and filter. Then greased all the fittings. Parked it on a ramp to make getting underneath easier.

I have to agree with Dumbdog , the owner will do a better job. I did my 50hrs.oil & filter/fuel filter myself ,along with my manual, just take your time and you'll be just fine.

We've just aquired a load on shiney new Jacobsen greens, fairways and tees mowers..and a condition of the warranty is that the Dealer does the 50hr service and again after 1yr to enable the second year of warranty.

I wish I had negotiated that when I bought the tractor but at this point I don't see much reason in having the dealer do the service. I'm comfortable with most mechanical stuff so I can change the fluids myself.

As I said, I don't want to be penny wise and dollar foolish. If there was some value in having the dealer do it, I'd certainly go that route.
