Do I need to remove the backhoe attachment before replacing the hydraulic fluid in the tractor or should I leave it attached?

It won't matter..... unless it is in the way of working on it. No fluid will come out of the BH.

You can't accurately see sight glass when it's mounted. Getting at fill tube a pain with it on also.

Thanks for the input, I plan to remove it for access to the fill tube and sight glass. It is an easy task to remove the backhoe.

Another question:

Do I check the sight glass with tractor idling or not running?

Idling, on a level surface. If the sight glass is totally full, you probably won't be able to tell if it's empty or full; you might look at it first with the engine NOT running (it will be a bit lower) to see if you can see the fluid line in the sight glass. Then start and look again. Better yet, stand back there looking while someone else starts the engine.

The reason the transmission has a big sight glass, and not a dip stick is the oil level isn't real critical. If it's anywhere in, or close to the sight glass, it's going to work fine.

It can be hard to tell where you're at, especially if you fill it above the sight glass. So, take your time with the last gallon.

The transmission takes 11 litres (quarts). 10 1/2 may not show in the sight glass, 11 1/2 may completely fill it. Keep track of how much you pour in. Check the breather valve on the oil fill cap while you have it out.

my GC2400 manual, page 56, which (iirc) is the same procedure for ALL 17xx series is engine off.
I can check newer 1723 and 1725M series if needed today but when servicing a 1725M few weeks ago procedure was same.
