While performing the 50 hour service on my Workmaster 40, the manual says to unscrew the hydraulic filter, replace with a new one and top off the reservoir. Based on that direction, I imagined I would need a quart or so that would have been held in the filter, and maybe some trickle from the mounting area. Upon removal of the old filter, hydraulic fluid proceeded to pour out of the tractor very quickly. Not being ready for that to happen, I had to hurry and install the new filter while fluid was pouring out of the tractor. Must have lost at least 4 - 5 quarts. Is this normal? If so, they seem fairly non chalant about it in the manual.

Yes normal, just remember to top it off. Some people park the tractor on a side hill with the filter on the high side and you will lose less fluid. Others use a shop vac hose held to the hydraulic fill hole to create suction and you lose very little. Hope this helps.
