While performing the 50 hour service on my Workmaster 40, the manual says to unscrew the hydraulic filter, replace with a new one and top off the reservoir. Based on that direction, I imagined I would need a quart or so that would have been held in the filter, and maybe some trickle from the mounting area. Upon removal of the old filter, hydraulic fluid proceeded to pour out of the tractor very quickly. Not being ready for that to happen, I had to hurry and install the new filter while fluid was pouring out of the tractor. Must have lost at least 4 - 5 quarts. Is this normal? If so, they seem fairly non chalant about it in the manual.

I am just coming up on the 50 hour service on my T4.74 so I haven't changed any filters at this point.
I don't think many folks do their own service any more so the manuals are not written as well as they were in the past and some pertinent details are left out. My neighbor, a weekend warrior, doesn't even know where to check the oil level on his tractor and would think what you are doing with your tractor pure magic. :) At least you know for the next time what to have ready. Experience is a great teacher.....

A couple things you can do to mitigate the huge rush of fluid out of the hole. Method 1 is park the tractor on an angle so the the filter mounting hole is on the high side.

Method 2 is to find and plug the "tank" air vent. This prevents air from getting into the tank (transmission housing). No air in, at the top makes it hard for the fluid to pour out the bottom. Sure some still drips out but air must enter now from this same hole, so it really slows down the exit speed of the fluid.

Method 3: Use a vacuum cleaner on the fill port while changing the filter. This causes air to be sucked into the filter port hole, making it difficult for fluid to come out. I use method 2, plugging up of the air vent. Look for a rubber fitting bent into the shape of a shepherds crook with a hole in the end. Do NOT forget to unplug the air vent when you are done, before you start the tractor and operate the hydraulics. I forgot once, and when lowering the FEL lift, it blew the dipstick out its hole.
