My old mariner 40 hp boat motor is getting tired, time to replace it.I have been looking at 50 hp motors,Suzuki, yamaha, honda, mercury and evinrude.Thinking about going with 4 stroke motor. So many choices out there really don,t know which motors are more dependable than the other.Any input would be appreciated.

Definitely 4 stroke... there's no doubt. Low maintenance, quiet, sips fuel, reliable and you don't have the smell of the exhaust like the 2 stroke motors.

IMO, any of those listed are equally good as I have no loyalty to brand names. I have a 50hp Merc on my pontoon boat that's made by Yamaha. No problems after I cleaned out the "white rust" in the fuel system I inherited from the previous owner. I think all of the Merc power heads are Yami's until you get into 115hp plus.

If I were going to replace it, I'd probably buy a Honda but they are the most expensive. I've owned many 2 strokes over the years but could never go back after having a four stroke, but that's just me.

Mercury has an awesome 4 stroke 60hp. I have always been a Merc fan so I am a little biased.

Anything newer that you get the best deal on would be great. I would highly recommend fuel injection though.

My local Suzuki dealer quoted $7,000 plus tax on a new 50 hp model DFA with controls, power trim and tilt, prop and level gauge for the dash to see if the motor is level or tilted.

That is a good quote, that will be hard to beat.

I've seen a bunch of salt water motors in the Gulf, but they're not very popular around here in SE Ohio. Suzuki has been quite innovative lately and trying to take some of the market share. That is a killer price, but like your tractor purchase, are you comfortable with your dealer? Boat stuff is inherently troublesome for some reason.
