Tractor
John Deere 5103 w/ 512 LDR
I'm now looking at a JD 5105 utility tractor. I like the stability and comfort of the larger frame while mowing. I have 2 questions:

1) Any 5105 owners advice on options, set-up, reviews, and price?

2) What are the comparable tractors of other brands and how do they measure up?

Thanks in advance.

Take a good look around at the other brands too. Compare everything out there, then make a decision on what works best for you. Demo them all if you can. Just about everything out there is good these days,no matter what color, brand,or country it was made in. Good Luck!

Take a look at a New Holland TC 55. It is esentially an upgraded 2120 and I've been using mine sine 1987. Very dependable

I came REALLLYY close to buying a 5105. Reallly close!

I then went and checked out the Kubotas. I bought a M4900 which had more standard features that were options on the JD 5105. Plus 0% financing for three years. It was cheaper too. Also I beleive the warranty is a little longer.

So far I have just under 30 hours on it and it has been flawless.

The Kubota M5040 is the replacement for the 4900 but doesn't have the 0% financing.

I purchased a 5203 John Deere last week and so far I like it very much. THere was an 05 series on the lot but the 03 series had everything that I needed so I didn't consider the 05. From what I saw the price jumps up a good bit for the 05 and the main difference is you can get 4wd on the o5 that you can't on the 03. The 05 has a syncro transmission but it is only a 8speed where the 03 is 9.From what I have read on this forum inthe past the 9speed collarshift is a stronger transmission too. I would have considered Kubota but we do not have a good Kubota dealer close by. I thnk that most people will agree the dealer you have to deal with is about as important as the tractor! I think that you will also find that Deere's parts availability is second to none in the industry.

Paper spec's wise I zero'd in on the 5105, loader, MFWD, etc.

Then my local JD dealer took in a 200 hour trade.

Drove it and was disappointed. It felt light, narrow, and tippy.

Reset my search and found a JD 6300 cab, MFWD, loader, etc. 2300 hours.

Now this was a tractor. After choking over the price, only difficulty was the turning radius of 2 acres.

Stepped down to the 5420 size & was perfect. About the only brands not represented in my area are Mahindra, Kioti, and Kubota.

Stopped in to a small local dealer that carries Zetor, Valtra & Montana.

Bought the Zetor sized like a 5420 and weighs 5 tons (without filling tires) like a 6300.

I have narrow forest roads and steep sloped fields so I need maneuverability and weight to hold the attachments in check.

I would also look at Kioti. Mahindra is a good choice, or its cousin TYM. These are every bit as good as the big 3.

I didn't end up with a 5103, but looked at a lot of tractors and was in the position you are in. It took me a year to decide. Kioti was out because there aren't that many dealers. I liked the mahindra 5500, but it was only slightly less cost than the 5103, and having the shifter off to the side and the QA bucket of the deere would have been worth the extra cash to me. Look around, deals can be found.

Kosse,

I noticed you got a NH TC40, how does it ride when mowing? I borrowed a neighbor's and it beat me to death. I've also rented a Kubota 3400 that bounces around a lot. The most comfortable ride I've found is my father-in-law's old Massey 261. It's a full size ag tractor, but it goes everywhere I need it to. That's why I'm leaning toward a full size tractor.
