50 Hr. Service Question

I bought my 4115 about 1 year ago,it now has 27 hrs.The salesman told me not to change the oil before 50 hrs. because it was break in oil. Now he was a nice fella and all but probably not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to product knowledge.My question is:has anyone been in this same situation and had a different answer from a knowledgeable JD service person?I have always changed the oil in my other tractors every spring but the way the salesman told me if I change before 50 Hrs. it could start using oil.Any help would be appreciated.

Change the oil and filter now, or at least the filter. Do this in addition to the 50 hour service. What do you have to lose? This way you won't worry...

I would keep break-in oil in the machine until 150 or 200 hours. I did my 50 hour service, and went back into the shop at my dealership to ask about keeping break-in oil in it. Their head guy said to keep it in the machine until 150 or 200 hours. So I would change it, but refill with the break-in oil. I have 120 hours now without any oil loss, so I'm happy.

I changed my break-in oil with a fresh filter and fresh break-in oil at 25 hours. At 50 hours, I changed to 15W-40 JD oil. I verified my thinking with my shop tech and he thought it was a good idea. He advised against going to the 15W-40 before 50 hours, too. In fact, he said he has some JD literature on rebuilds that recommend going to 100 hours on break-in oil.

Your dealer should have 1-gallon jugs of JD break-in oil on the shelf. It won't cost you any more, you will still be following your manual guidelines, and you'll have a bit more peace of mind.
