Getting ready to do my 50 hr service, got all the fluids and filters from the dealer. Oil change is simple enough not much different then doing my truck. Problem is what in the world do I put under the tractor to catch the 34l of transmission oil. My oil drain pain only holds about 9l and the biggest one I can find holds about 15l. Trying to put the plug back in half way may be a messy proposition or maybe 2 pans or make that 3 at 15l each:(.
What does everyone else use and where did you get it or did you make it?
Thanks, Frank

I went through the same ordeal-- and finally resorted to simply putting the plug back in long enough to empty my oil drain pan, then slide it back under and begin again.

It took three shots to do the job, but it wasn't nearly as messy as I had feared- it's possible to put the drain plug in quickly with minimal spill on hands.

Putting fluid back in from a 5-gallon pail was harder; I had to put oil first into 1-gallon jugs and then use a long Rube Goldberg-arranged funnel to hit the little way-too-far-back fill hole. Even with the BH off, the metal panel behind the seat got in the way. I now have a metal funnel with a long, flexible spout, but have seriously drooled over Northern Tool's manual pump that fits over a 5-gallon pail. If I had to change transmission oil more often, I'd definitely have one of those!

I had dealer do 50 hours services on both my tractors. They wanted to see what came out for any metals, etc.Figure it be easier on my warranty if they had control of first service. The services ran over 500 dollars each time. I have done the remaing services with my friend. I did the services on first tractor sooner on the motor then was recommended,it only held a couple of quarts including the filter. This tractor has more oil capacity. plowking

I bought one of those galvanized metal wash tubs, I think it holds 15 gallons (not exactly sure, but held the 11 gallons that came out of my tractor). It was a little tall to fit under the tractor, so I made a couple of 3" tall wooden pads to pull the back wheels up on. When I was done I siphoned the oil out of the tub back into the 5 gallon containers it came out of. Amazingly enough it went smoothly (of course I never get away without making atleast a little mess). I'll do it the same way next time.

Maybe I need to dig a work pit so I can get under there with 5 gal pails, backhoe seat time :) I did find a couple larger drain pans on the internet, nice with wheels and everything. I don't I want to spend that kind of money for something I'll only use every 300 hours of seat time.
I think I'll give the putting the plug back in a try.
Thanks for the info

I used three different containers, and shoved the full one out with the next empty one, very little spillage.

I went with putting the plug back in every time my drain pan got full. It worked very well, only a couple of small spots on the garage floor.
Thanks Irvingj. I don't think I would have tried it that way, I figured it would make a big mess. Now I have 300 hrs of happy seat time before I need to do the hydraulics again.

On the larger compacts, get yourself some 5 gallon buckets. If need be, cut a few inches off the top of the bucket so it can slide under the tractor. Place all the buckets under the tractor so they are handy. As someone stated, pull the drain plug and fill 1 bucket about 3/4 full. Once 3/4 full, slide it away and immediatley slide a new bucket in its place (buckets should be touching each other so leaks are minimal). Repeat the process. When done quickly, you will find you only loose a few drops of oil. Try it once as a dry run with out removing drain plug so you are prepared. If you are going to reuse the oil, make sure the buckets are clean first.

And what about the small framed CUT, MF 1523 in our case, we will be doe for the hydro change next summer. Should we jack it up and put blocks under the tires, or jack stands under the axles? Or buy shallow drain pans??
