$50 no weld toothbar

I wanted a toothbar but couldn't really justify spending the dollars for a real one - so I picked up some "rock guards" at the local farm store for $6 a peice - they are pretty good for the job, although I had to do some minor modification - I used 1/4" two inch wide bar stock for the bar, drilled the holes, and bent the ends with a sledgehammer. I threaded the bar holes with a 1/2" tap, and 1" bolts fit perfect to attach the teeth so the bar lays flat. $50, no welding, and it works pretty good for light duty/occasional use - even though the teeth are cast, they seem to be pretty strong - if one breaks its easily replacable

Here's a picture of the teeth, before and after modification - I removed the "cutter bar" by drilling out the rivet, and then ground it flat with an angle grinder

While I would not want to give up my "real" tooth bar, I say that is pretty slick and sure looks functional.

Thanks for sharing. Duplicating what you have done will probably help out a lot who visit here who are not able to lay out the $200+ for a regular tooth bar. The "No Weld" feature is an especially nice touch for those who cannot weld... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

maybe they will hold up for light use but i doubt it, i know the ones on my haybine are getting bent all the time from rocks and stuff, so i cant imagine using them that way they will hold up well

jeff; Obviously you've been thinking. It looks like you did anice job. Before I bought my Markham, I was looking around for something to work with like yourself. I never thought of using what you did, I usually end up leaving Tuff S%&$ Charlies with the same money in my pocket I went in with. Hope your idea works . If it doesn't, your only out 50 bucks.

Pretty clever I say. Especially with the flip them over routine to put the large side upwards. Let us know how they work out.

Whether or not they hold up.. I like the ingenuity.

Perhaps under the right circumstances.. ( medium to light duty?? ) they will be a good 50$ answer to a problem that only had a 200$ answer? Who knows. Report back as you use it.

I love building stuff. I just recently had to convert a piece of 1.5" od canopy tubing into a steering tube for my old 8n, as my oem one bent, putting the steering shaft into a bind. Took a bit of honing and machining on a grindstone and ID reamer.. but I got my bearings presse din, and the tractor is now driving around rather than being disassembled inthe barn... and all for about 6$ worth of thin walled pipe....

pretty cool project.. let us know how they hold up..

looks like should do fine for lighter work.. or on smaller buckets that are on small machines.. that would not have lots of force to begin with...
