501 Farmi drum overun brake?

I searched the forum but didn't exactly find what I am looking for.

I am in contact with an estate selling off the equipment of a man who died a couple years ago. They are selling a Farmi JL501 winch. They don't know very much about it, and it is located about 2 hours from my house.

I am trying to find out if this winch has the drum overun brake feature. The winch is 3-4 years old according to the people selling it. Does anyone on this list know if the drum overun brake was found on a 501 winch of this age? Or is it a feature that was added in the last couple of years?

Any help is much appreciated.

I'm not sure what feature you are actually referring since I never thought about it. I don't think they have mede any changes to the product since introduction. I have had 2 Farmi winches, a 351 and now a 501. They are both excellent winches. The 501 is about 8 years old and has been flawless. I don't know anybody who is unhapply with Valby and Farmi products. If you have a question about your particular unit just call Northeast Implement

Thanks for the reply. In respect of their time, I hesitate to contact a vendor since the winch I am looking to purchase is used. Now if Northeast Implement is the US rep for the product then that is a different story. (Anybody know who the US rep is?)

On your 501 is there a device that keeps the drum from paying out cable once you stop pulling? I know there is on the newest models of the 501, I just don't know if the older 501's have this feature. This device keeps the cable from rats nesting on the drum.

The way I understand it works is that when the cable is pulled out it puts pressure on a lever arm that releases a brake on the drum. (This brake is separate from the ratchet brake operated via the rope.) When the cable no longer has tension on it the lever arm is released and the brake is applied.

Do you know if this is this the way yours works?

They are the US Reps/Importers. They also have no problem talking to people or supplying parts. A few years back when people were having trouble getting Valby chipper blades sharpened they started ofering a reasonable service to do it. I'll take a look at mine when I get a chance. I don't think I have that feature but I have never had a problem with the cables getting twisted.
I have had 2 Valby chippers and 2 Farmi winches and they have all been totally trouble free.

I just spoke with Northeast Implement and they said that all the 501's have this device installed. The 290's don't. They use a friction plate that is producing drag all the time.

My old 501 has that arm, but it does not work properly. I need to adjust it apparently.
