Doing a little window shopping on the 5045d and 5055d (also looking at a MF 2615) and have a few questions.

1. Anyone using these tractors to make round bales of hay?

2. The independent PTO, can you feather it on or is it a sudden on - giving whatever is attached a nice jolt on start-up?

3. I read/see a lot of home owners buy these tractors, but anyone using one on a regular basis on a farm? How is it holding up?

The primary chores for this tractor would be making hay, square and 4x4 round bales, on addition to some bush hogging and misc other farm chores.

Thanks!
Bill

I've heard people doing hay with both of them just not around where I live. I do know of 3 people that do hay with 5303's which is basically the same tractor as the 5045/5055 just more hp(equal to the 5056 of today). If it were me I would go with the 5055d, have a bit more hp on tap. I don't recall the model but New Holland makes a small round baler that should set up perfect with that tractor.

the pto is going to give a jolt and make a sound when it starts up since it's independent. Just the way the cookie crumbles with them, it's either on or it's not. Always engage it at idle or just above idle to make it easier on the pto clutch. It'll bog the engine down some and sound like you're tearing up the tractor but you aren't I promise.

Thanks for the info!

Do you know if the engines on either of these tractors have an onboard computer or are they entirely mechanical?

Thanks again,
Bill

Only ECU I saw in 5045D/5055D parts catalog is for power beyond kit

I'm using a 5103 (2008) for round bales (5x6) and it seems to do the job ok. This is my first year so the jury is still out. Won't know until next year when I will have a bigger crop to do. Baler is an old Vermeer 605C.

I would think a JD 5103 would be too small to bale a 4x6 not to mention a 5x6. The bales must not weigh very much.

What intrigues me on the 5045 and the 5055 is the Nebraska tests. While the 5055 is rated at 45 PTO by JD, the Nabraska test shows it at around 51 hp. The 5045 is not testes yet, but the 5103 is rated at 38ish hp by JD and the Nebraska test shows it coming in at around 46 hp.

I've been doing a lot of reading about hp requirements for round balers and while I accept that a large 4x5, 4x6 or 5x6 bale can easily get over 1,000 lbs and some close to 2,000 lbs and require very high hp tractors (in addition to weight), I also see that min hp requirements for 4x4 balers are around 40-45 hp.

So if the 5103 is truely similar to the 5045 and ultimately Nebraska test at 46 hp, then a 4x4 baler that takes a minimum of 40 hp might be a good fit - if you take it easy and stay off slopes. OTOH - the 5055, coming in at 51ish hp on the Nebraska test vs the 45 hp JD claim for PTO hp - this tractor IMHO would probably be fine for a 4x4 baler.

But open mined about all this - reading and learning.

Thanks!

The PTO on my 5055E is a lever operated clutch. You can feather it on start up, and it doesn't have a brake, so it coasts down when you disengage it.
