Is the "low air flow" light supposed to come on when starting and then go out? The manual says the oil pressure light does but does not call out same for air flow. Mine comes on then goes out after about 1 second. Also, how do you operate the air dump valve to see if dust has collected? The manual also says if you remove the smaller , inner, secondary filter to replace it. I know you can't clean it but is there anything wrong with removing it for inspection and then replacing it? Or does " replace " mean reinstall vs buying a new one? The secondary filter does not appear to lock in. The primary filter locks in by rotating it . It captures the secondary filter.'

Deere claims that there is too much risk getting dust/dirt into the system if you just inspect and try to clean an air filter. Do it as least often as you can, and rely on the "low air flow" light (coming on during ignition lets you know it is working and not burned out bulb).

Just squeeze the air dump valve and it will open to let out any dust/dirt that it collects. Unless real dusty conditions (mowing, etc.), not much will come out. I've not found any in 15 or so years.

I would agree with beenthere on the light coming on at start up just shows it is working. If the air flow is restricted enough the light will stay on indicating the filter needs cleaning or should be replaced.

About cleaning and changing filters, I work in a dusty environment often and need to service my air filters frequently. I remove the primary filter and lightly tap the rubber edge against a tire while slowly rotating the filter, swap ends and repeat. I use a leaf blower if handy to clear what is left blowing air from the inside out at idle. I leave the inner blue filter alone and visually inspect it when it looks clean I reinstall the outer primary filter. At the first sign of dust or dirt on the blue filter I change the primary filter because it has a hole in it. I use a paint brush to dust off the blue filter and if it looks good I reuse it. If it gets much dirt in the blue filter at all I change it, I don't try to clean it or blow it out. The blue filter is there to protect the engine and is far cheaper than a rebuild.

In a nutshell if you are very careful when cleaning the primary air filter you can get a lot of use out of it. I can't afford to change this filter twice a day when it is very dusty. I change it at the first sign of a tear or leak.
