I have a new to me 2009 5065M cab tractor MFWD with about 1100 hours on it. After running it for about an hour, the exclamation point warning light comes on and the symbol on the instrument panel that looks like a chemistry flask lights up. The engine speed then won't exceed 1500 rpm.

According to the operators manual the 'chemistry flask' indicates an engine fault and the operator should review the error codes. However, no error codes are displayed as far as I can tell - at least not on the dash readout which displays hours, mph, etc. Is there another way to retrieve the codes?

The oil and coolant levels are fine and I don't see any leaks anywhere on the machine. I am thinking that moisture and sediment needs to be drained from the fuel filter and fuel tank (the 5065M does not have a glass bowl). Could this trigger the warning lights and limit the engine speed? I've been using the tractor lately to move mulch and brush piles around so it has been exposed to dust, etc.

Anyone experienced anything similar? Grateful for any replies.

thanks

Is it "E" & "G" that is lighting up or "E" & "I"?

"E": Illuminates when a malfunction occurs (review error message in Information Display). If necessary, have John Deere dealer diagnose vehicle.
"G": Illuminates when air cleaner element clogged (clean or replace element). If necessary, have John Deere dealer diagnose vehicle.
"I": Illuminates when engine malfunction occurs (check oil level and review error message in Information Display). If necessary, have John Deere dealer diagnose vehicle

Start simple, check, clean or replace air filter.

Not sure how deluxe your model is, or if it should display codes.
I suspect "G" triggers off the pressure switch on the air filter canister.
I suspect "I" triggers off an oil pressure switch (and maybe more?).

Hopefully you have good oil pressure.

Hi,

It's E and I that are illuminating. I tried bleeding the fuel filter as per the operators manual. On the first try I got about 3 ounces of what looked like half water and half diesel, with the water at the bottom of the bottle and sediment visible in the diesel. After running the tractor for about 1.5 hours the same lights came on and rpm was limited to about 1500. I then did a second bleeding which yielded about 8 ounces of what looked like clear diesel. After that I ran the tractor for another 2 hours. The lights didn't come on at all while working, but when I switched to a higher gear to go back to the shop they did. However, it didn't limit the revs this time.

Seems to me it may be a fuel issue. I'm planning to replace the fuel filter and also drain any water/sediment from the fuel tank. (I omitted that step from the operators manual).

The air cleaner is new and as far as I know the oil pressure is fine.

Thanks

you might have a oil pressure sensor going bad. you could try using a mechanical gage and take a reading when you get the warning lights.

That light is the engine lubricating system fault light. That is the end view of an engine not a flask. Check oil level. I assume it wasn’t knocking and would have locked up in under a minute without lubrication so the above post might be dead on. I don’t know if your model has an oil level sensor or not. If so the level could be low but still pumping oil. The level sensor (if applicable) could be bad also.

Another thought, don't know if this tractor is like a car where the oil change hours are monitored and if not reset to zero after an oil change, indicates going over the number of suggested hours for that change.
It happens in my GM SuV, if the system isn't reset after an oil change...

That light in this application acts as oil pressure light as well as a check engine light. Really need to check for codes to see where the problem is. Since other light lit was yellow exclamation point, it is not an urgent code such as no oil pressure. Could possibly be low oil pressure though, or any number of other faults such as restricted fuel filter, bad sensor, misfire, etc.

Thanks for all the responses. I finally determined, with the help of Deere field services, that the problem was the fuel strainer (not fuel filter). This is a small metal cylinder located under the seat, accessed by raising the rubber floor mat and removing a rectangular cover. Mine was clogged, so I removed it and cleaned it by blowing brake cleaner through it. Reinstalled and problem fixed. Hopefully this may help anyone who researches this issue in the future.
