I'm doing the first 50hr hydraulic filter change. What I understood was that this was basically a "dry" change. However, when I started unscrewing the filter, a good bit of fluid started coming out. I've probably lost about ½qt maybe a little more before I tightened it back up. Is this normal? Is there something I should have done before unscrewing the filter? Will I have to do something, other than just check the fluid level, after I've replaced the filter?

Yes, it's normal. All you should do is fill the new filter up with fluid before you put it back on which will replace much of the fluid you lose.
