I just finished editing and uploading a 3 part series on my tractor playlist on my YouTube Channel. Go check it out!

LS XR4145C - 5hr Service - Part 1 - YouTube

I did make some minor mistakes. This is the first time I did a service on the tractor. My dealer quoted me bit too much $$ for a transport fee + service fee to do the service. So, I did it myself for WAAAYYY less $$
Enjoy and tell me what you think!
Thanks for Watchin!

I think you should be commended for your efforts. Your video is confirmation that I should have the dealer pick up my BX when it is due for a 50 hour service. You were a JD mechanic and ran into those issues. I could only imagine my tales of woe.

My dealer does not charge transport fees, so the savings doing the service myself is not all that great.

If you are not mechanically inclined, I would have your dealer do it. Especially if they do not charge a hauling fee. It is time consuming and messy. You have to have a few tools (like filter wrench) and catchment pans, a place to dispose of the oil, a level surface, etc. However, the satisfaction, knowledge, and cost savings gained by doing your own maintenance is totally worth it.

After that 50hr service, I am more confident in fixing other issues as they may arise than before that service. The small issues I ran into, are nothing. The oil that came out during the hydraulic filter change, was totally my fault (in the dealership, we never used a vacuum and almost always lost about a gallon of oil, but had large catchment pans and plenty of oil to replace it with), the leaking plug is my udder neglect at catching a standard simple thing, and I forgot that my tires will filled with beat juice and that would come out if I put my gauge on that valve stem. You live and learn. I would not be put off on my videos. They were not meant to deter anyone from doing their own maintenance. My hope was that others would see how easy it is and that anyone can do it. But, to each is their own.

Also, keep in mind that I was a JD mechanic way back in 2005 for about 3 years. The last time I did a 50 hour was back then. So, I was a bit rusty, however, I do all the maintenance on all my vehicles. Tractors are a bit different though.

Thanks for watchin!!

Just getting prepped to do my 4155-probably next weekend. I just hit 45 hours.

Got a question for you- which trans/hyd fluid did you end up going with? I have Hy-Tran that I use for my Case 580E but I haven’t sourced a hyd/trans fluid for the LS. Manual specifies LSTH570 (GS Caltex or S-Oil Total) which I haven’t been able to source (and probably wouldn’t be willing to pay for!).

I went to North 40 and picked up some of their Harvest King Universal Trans-Hydro fluid. Think it ran me something like $20 for a 2 gal jug.

I have 5 gallons of that around the shop-you didn’t notice any difference in the HST or hydros?

Well, my tractor is gear driven. But in the hydros, no. I only added about 2qts to replace what I lost when I changed the filter. You dont have to change the oil when you do the 50hr service. I think that is on the 500hr, but no certain, I know its a while yet.

ok so what is the ISO viscosity rating on that oil? mine calls for LSTH400G, GS caltrex, but it also lists ISO VG 32/46.....so my local TSC carries their brand in 46 Travelers All Season....I'm wondering if that will be sufficient?

Typical ISO hydraulic oil is simply standard hydraulic oil, however, it is not suitable for HST driven tractors or tractors equipped with wet brakes or clutches. The one I got, I believe the viscosity is 46. However, it is specifically designed as a 'hydraulic transmission fluid' suitable for HST's, wet brakes and clutches, and also works for your FEL or remotes.

The 'API GL4' you mentioned in the sticky gives it away as you will require something other than typical standard ISO AW 46. Sorry, it is typically more expensive. But, if you swap that filter quickly enough, you probably wont need much to replace.

FYI, North40 around here is very similar to TSC.

...and looking at TSC's website, this should do you just fine: Traveller Premium Universal Tractor Trans/Hydraulic Fluid at Tractor Supply Co.

I was in the same place, wondering what hydraulic fluid to use in my hydrostatic LS MT240HE. After a couple of hours of searching I emailed my dealer who told me, "We recommend our LS fluid but Tractor Supply sells their Traveler premium universal Hyd/ Transmission fluid and 15/40 that conforms to diesel standards also is fine for the engine, it meets the specs and is half the price."

While I wonder about the "engine" part, that was not my current worry.
