It is time for my 50 hour service and I want your opinions on the benefits of letting the dealer do the service or buying the filters and fluids then doing it myself. I have no dought I am capable of doing the service but when I called the dealer for pricing I was given a price of $150.00 (ballpark) for the service. I figure the filters and fluids will be at least half of this? If so I see this as a bargin seeing that I only have to transport about 15 miles. Any thoughts or opinions apreciated. Past experiences with doing it yourself ? Any trouble with bleeding the fuel system after changing fuel filter? If you do it yourself do you use "New Holland" filters and fluids?

Thanks,
Chris

My 50 hour service was included in the purchase price, so it was a no brainer. You can do it with no problem. I suggest checking the unit over very closely as if any bolts, etc. have come loose, now is the time to make sure all is well. You will not have a problem with fuel filter; change it, it may run "funny" for a short time, but all should be good. One fuel filter, hydro filter x 2 plus oil filter. grease all fittings, lube needed areas, check coolant, power steering and hydro levels. Good to go.

Chris, I think dqdave1 mentioned everything except engine oil. That's the only recommended fluid change at 50 hr. The hydraulic fluid stays until 300 hr. Your price of $150 sounds very good to me. I think that's slightly less than I paid for my tractor's first 50 hr service. The price of filters has actually come down.

What you gain by taking your tractor to the dealer for the first 50 hr service is that they will check other things as they are doing the 50 hr. If there is something you want adjusted, this is the perfect time to ask for that. That's what I would negotiate for. In my case, I found that battery acid vapors had leaked and severly corroded my radiator and HST cooler hoses. Both of these were replaced under warranty at 50 hours as well as a broken joystick. It was all bundled into a very worthwhile trip to the dealer.

If I lived 150 miles from my dealer, I'd think twice about taking the tractor in for the 50 hr. But in your case, I think I would do it.

A trip to my dealer would only cost $300 for transportation.
Add $150, now it is $450.

If your $150 includes transportation, go for it! And go with your machine to the dealer and watch them do the service. You will learn how to do it.

I am changing all filters and all fluids for $270 in the next week. But this is way much more than a 50 hr service. 11 gallons of hydraulic fluid. Change all the fluids in the front wheels, front end, tranny, radiator, both air filters, power shuttle filter, engine oil filter and hydraulic filter, diesel fuel filter.

I do one thing every day. Makes it easy to do and I just have to watch one item a day for a potential leak. I learn a lot about my machine.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll let you know what I decide.

If your $150 includes transportation, go for it! Bob
Bob transportation is not included, but I have a trailer and truck and will take care of transport if I take her in.

How far do you have to travel? I would definitely hang out and watch/help them do it.
