5103 AND A 8' MOWER

You should be able to handle this mower with ballast as mentioned above but I doubt it will actually cut better than using the smaller mower, I would think you will have slow forward movement in tall grass with this 8' mower. You may actually cover more ground with the smaller deck since it would have less driveline losses and surely would be easier to manuever.

AGGIE00, a 2640 is 70pto hp not 79 just to clarify for other readers and this would be a much better match than the 5103.

I agree and would add that sharpness of the blades is a huge factor on a rotary cutter. With sharp blades way less power is required, will cut faster, quality of cut is better, less fuel is needed and it's much easier on the tractor and mower. Rotary cutter blades are not usually very sharp but if cutting high grass then they should stay sharp a long time.

Should have mentioned the best and easiest way I have found to keep the blades sharp is with an angle grinder. Raise the deck as high as possible, block it up for safety, and go at it -- don't need to remove the blades.

The 9 is right next to the 0 on the keyboard.
