Do you experience heavy white & blue smoke on cold start up?..My 5205 has done this since I bought it new back in Aug 05..JD has put a new injector pump, vale guide seals and the problem still exists..It has 26 hrs on it now..Problem started at 4 hrs..3rd time in shop..I just got it back yesterday, fired it up this morning and still getting lots of white blue smoke..If I had smoke alarms in the shed, they would go off..JD says I will see some smoke for about 20 seconds on start up..I don't think it should be white/blue..Maybe a little black..
Any input would be much appreciated..Thanks

I noticed my 5103 does this also. It is not a lot of smoke though, lasts about 5 seconds and the manual says this is normal. My oil level has not changed and the tractor only has about 18 hours on it.

I just took delivery of a 4320 on Saturday. I started it this afternoon and got a huge cloud of this blue-white smoke. No warning lights were on. Like you say, the garage absolutely filled with smoke. I thought warming it up would help, but no. So, I shut it down and restarted it, and it was fine. What gives? I have 6.8 hours on the tractor, and the dealer put the first 5.4 on for me.

I don't know if the 5000 series has glow plugs or an intake preheater or not, but my 990 blows a good bit of smoke on startup also. I think it's normal, at least in my case. The Yanmar engine in the 990 has an intake preheater but no glow plugs. Using the preheater I get a puff of black smoke on startup but about 2 seconds after that, when the nice warm pre-heated air is used up, the white smoke starts up. It will go for anything up to a minute or so at some level of smoke, and then actually increases for a while. There is a point when the engine computer (or whatever electronic controls it has) decides it's warm enough to drop down from high idle and I think might even change the injection timing a bit. Or maybe it has held the preheater on for that time and then shuts it off. In any event, the result is a change in engine sound and a sudden increase in the amount of white smoke. Then it's just a wait for the engine to fully warm up and the smoke gradually goes away. I suspect engines with glow plugs or those of different design (eg. indirect injection) might produce much less smoke. There does seem to be a wide variation in the amount of smoke considered normal for different machines, from what I've read on this board.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the fuel can make a big difference as well. See here for a recent post I made regarding my machine smoking worse than normal due to old fuel.

Hopefully there is nothing wrong with your machine, but if you find there is and get it resolved, let us know. I'm always keen to learn more about our machines and diesel engines in general! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Update: JD district tech comming out Monday to check out the 5205..Suppose to be bringing some device they can hook up to it to see if injector pump is timed correctly with engine..
