I was bush hogging yesterday and the mower threw a rock that broke the bottom hydraulic level sight glass that sits just to the left of the PTO shaft.

Does anyone know if this glass can be replaced or will I have to buy the whole PTO shaft cover? The broken part is #7 in the attached photo.

If the sight glass can be replaced, what's the best method?

I don't know if both parts are required in the replacement process but here's the PN's for #7 & #8
R140037 SIGHT PLUG, WINDOW, OBSERVATION ADD 6.00 USD
R140036 PLATE, WINDOW ADD 3.44 USD

My guess is the retainer #8 is a one time use item and I would buy an new one for the repair. Don't for get Item #1 gasket.

Since I have no personal experience with the later model JD tractors I was guessing what might be required. I didn't give thought to the need to R&R the pto housing.

I was specifically wondering if this thing is press-fit from the outside, which would mean that it can be replaced without removing the cover, or whether it is installed from the inside. I would prefer not to take the cover off just to find out that I didn't have to.

This is a picture of the PTO cover from the inside. The broken sight gauge area is circled in Red:

The manual states in Procedure 7: "Inspect sealed sight gauges (N) for leakage around seal or fracture in glass. Replace sight gauge using a bushing, bearing and seal drive set."

This is the picture from the manual:

I don't know exactly what "Replace sight gauge using a bushing, bearing and seal drive set" means. It looks like it's press-fit from the outside to me.

It looks like it replaces from the inside to me. The drawing is just showing the order of the parts installed, not the direction of installation.
Service manual calls out a driver (normally used for bearings and bushings) to install the retainer behind the sight glass.
You will need to drain the oil and pull the cover to repair. So buy the gasket too.

I replaced the sight glass yesterday. It goes in from the outside. I pried the broken one out and used an 11/16" socket and a rubber mallet to tap the new one back into the hole. Took less than 5 minutes. Couldn't have been easier.

What the pictures don't show is that the sight glass has a thick rubber grommet around the outside that compresses as you drive it into the hole so that it seals and stays put.

Glad you got it repaired that easily.

Did the sight glass come with the grommet, or was that a separate part you had to buy?

I'm fairly sure they are separate parts. At least it appears that way in the above photo.
