So this is a strange one to me (means I’m going to learn something!).
5105 is hooked to a manure spreader. Noticed today that when the clutch pedal is depressed, the pto starts to turn slowly. Not completely repeatable, seems to be more likely to happen when tractor is at operating temp than cold. Problem is that it will do this if the pto lever is in the disengaged position! If the clutch pedal is let out, the pto stops turning.
I haven’t done much more analysis , but the pto speed doesn’t track engine speed closely - it is not locked/engaged but kinda dragging. I’ve seen and heard of pto’s slipping (not turning or turning slow when engaged), but never this - turning when disengaged.
This 5105 is 50 hp ish open station 2wd, with a 512 loader. It is modern enough to have what I think is correctly called an independent pto. Normal operation is that the pto is engaged by a lever by the seat and tracks engine speed. It will turn if the clutch pedal is depressed or out, and if the tranny is in gear or out of gear.
Yes - I consider this to be a dangerous situation and we have taken the tractor out of operation.
Ideas are appreciated.
Thanks!
