I broke my first shear bolt on my 513 cutter Saturday, at about 1:15---15 minutes too late to run to the nearest parts dealer for a replacement.

In any event, using a screwdriver to depress the tabs, I could not get the sleeve/yoke to retract away from the joint to get any kind of view to line up the bolt hole, or to see if there's a portion of the broken bolt still in the hole.

What am I not doing correctly? Would it be best to get the sleeve off to replece the bolt, or should I just wait for another pair of hands to peel back the sleeve, while I turn the shaft to get things aligned?

Thanks.

It seems my guard was difficult to slide back the first couple times. You need about three hands to do it. Since then, with more wear and grease, it tends to come apart rather easily.

You will need to move it to get access to the bolt. The manual tells what bolts to use and they should be available at a hardware store in case your dealer isn't open. Buy several! And use locking nuts (this I know from experience). You can use the replacement to push out the old one if it is still stuck in there /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks---I just didn't want to force things too much. I've got a friend coming into town that can help this weekend and provide that third hand. A couple of years ago I bought a bunch of shear bolts to have on hand for my Bush Hog 60" cutter, but I just started using the 513 this weekend.

When the bolt went, I reached for the replacement kit I keep on the tractor for the wrenches and a bolt,a nd met a major disappointment. Foolish of me to assume both cutters'd take the same size shear bolt.

On my 513, the large bell shaped portion of the shield which covers the U joint and shear pin portion, turns about 1/4 turn, relative to the shaft cover. If you hold the shaft cover and turn the bell end, the bell should slide over the shaft cover, up twards the tractor, out of the way so you can replace the shear bolt. Those tabs you are trying to push in, will line up with notches on the other portion of the shaft cover when you turn it.
Once you figure it out, its' real quick and easy to do, and you only need one person.
Good luck,

DT

DT:

Thanks much. Got home last night and tried it like you said, and the cover slipped off without even using any tools. Now to get it back on just as easily....
