im looking at the two tractors mentioned above. first off, i dont have alot of land. I build houses, and mostly grad and finsh the lots off, cut driveways down, etc. i do however, bring the tractor to the hunting camp and work it around there, plots, bushhoging, etc, and need the bigger tractor for moving pallets and such around. so with that being said, i test drove both tractors, both are similar in HP, one being turbo, the other not. The thing i like about the 5225, short of it being a obout 5k more, is the synco gear being able to shift while moving. the syncroverser is not really a big deal to me. anyone else compare these two tracotrs, any owner opinions? thanks

Adam

The 5K really gets you a lot more however...take into consideration you upgrad from the 522 loader to the 542, the tractor has better hyd. flow & more lift capacity...plus it weighs more. The icing on the cake is that you like the trans. in the 5225 better, some actually prefer the trans. in the 5205...but if you like the 5225 trans. better than spend the extra $ and get what you like!! Keep us up to date.

abower1,

I don't know how to link another thread - but I posted quite a bit of 5000 Series info in the Kubota vs. John Deere thread in the Kubota Buying/Pricing Forum - it is on the second page...

It sounds like you do a lot of forward/reverse work based on your site prep/finishing and pallet unloading. If that's your main use, it can be really hard on a clutch (meaning replacements more often than you would like). The optional wet clutch on the 5225 might be worth considering.

I say this as someone who is getting a 5105 delivered in two days, and greatly looking forward to it!

I've had a 5205 and I currently have a 5225. They are both good tractors but are very different machines. The cost difference between what the two sold for new was about $2,000.00. The 5205 is a lighter machine, has a 3 cyl. engine and less hydralics. The 5225 is much heavier, has a turbocharged engine, and more hydralics. Being able to shift while moving has only been handy to me when I'm not paying attention and put it 2nd instead of 3rd. Either will do what you want, but to me it sounds like you'd be better off to buy the 5205 and use the savings to buy implements.....after all, they do most of the work.

Hello everybody. This is my first post! I registered here several days ago seeking insight about my loader. Strangely enough, you could use what I have learned since then (by the time the powers that be here approved my registration, the dealer and Deere solved my problem)

If you get a 5225 and decide to go with a 542 loader, be aware that the 542 MSL (mechanical self-level) reduces your bucket travel by 35%. You can not dump the bucket very well close to the ground. Your bucket cylinders have a 12" stroke and that's it. At ~8' high, you'll be at its full dump, i.e. bottom of bucket only perpendicular to the ground, not rolled under. Forget about using a 4in1 to backfill with the inside of the top jaw. At full dump, the closest you'll get it to the ground is 2 feet.

The solution for me was to swap the loader out for a non-MSL. I could deal with the MSL's reduced capacity (~900lbs or so 31" out), but not the short stroke bucket cylinders. My dealer had no idea and it is not published in the specs. Might save you some aggravation...
