I've had a problem the last few months with my 5220's brakes wanting to stick/drag.

The drag is light enough that it's only noticeable when it comes to a quick stop when you press in the clutch.

This fix was suggested to me by another owner I know:

Raise tractor RPM
Depress brakes as hard as possible
Turn steering wheel hard to one side
Hold for a minute or two.

This sequence does work, for a very short time. Totally back to normal and the tractor will coast a good ways after clutching. But within a few minutes it will go right back to the way it was.

Does anybody else have another suggestion to fix this, without having to tear it down?

This is not what you want to hear but on an older model JD utility tractor with very similar brake system my neighbor had to remove axle housing to R&R springs(key 1) to stop his tractor brakes from dragging. YMMV

I'm looking at the same task with my '99 5210, have bookmarked the pages in the 2 1/2" thick manual for both of our Deeres, have since bypassed the master cylinder when it began gushing oil (return oil from steering) and and needs rebuilt as well. After a few hours of 'can't use the brakes' the housing still warms when operating. I don't need the brakes for much of my use, roading heats 'em up and the drag is obvious, and I had 'er 100% and ready to sell when this went bad. :(

Brake repair begins with removing fenders and ROPS, then one has to muscle-off the heavy axle halves to access brake parts shown in Jim's pic. IIRC there's a 'kit' (part#) to replace the springs in 3s. Not looking forward to the task as a one man job, but I can scan/share pages (steps in order) to share, if finding the info online isn't easy. The only tricky part is in putting the pistons back in w/o mucking up their seals. Details of that are on youtube somewhere.

Is your oil clear or milky? Sometimes when oil gets contaminated with water, it can make brake lining swell and cause dragging. Since you can get brakes to free up briefly after hard application, makes me think linings are swelled. Brake retractor springs can cause problem also, but if there was any history of water in trans oil, I would recommend new brake disks when changing retractor springs.

Long way from an expert but I am having similar problem. Two questions:
1) Are both brakes locked together?? If not, do the left and right brakes do the same thing or do left and right act differently (one sticks/drags, the other not stick)??
2) Is the brake "pedal" (left or right) not returning and remaining partially depressed?? Or do the brake pedals return to normal position but the tractor just stops quicker than normal when applying clutch???

I have similar issue now.

Brake pedals were not totally returning after depressing the brake. If you pull the brake pedals up slightly with your foot ..... all is good. (you don't have to continue to hold the pedals up..... the pedal stays up once you pull it up). I have normal freewheeling with both pedals up.

After unlocking the brake pedals............ the right pedal operates fine/normal. The left pedal returns but not all the way causing a slight drag (I assume only on left brake). When they are locked, the left pedal prevents both pedals from returning all the way.

Currently I am trying to use the right brake pedal more or keep the left one returned/pulled up with my foot until I figure the problem out. I have sprayed some penetrating oil on the rotating/pivot areas of the brake pedal to help try and free up the left side (advise from Tx Jim). It seems to have helped some but I may have some more work to do.

Anyway .......... I thought some of this may help you further diagnose your issue. Gook luck!!
