First of all, I didn't do it. Just bought a tractor and had a friend pick it up from the seller. He Drove it onto a trailer to get it to his house temporarily. He thinks it turns over too slow, then can't get it started, then tries to jump start it. Problem is, it is a 6 volt and he used a 12v to jump and now it won't start at all. My question is, what did he fry, if anything? I'll be working on the tractor next weekend and would like to be prepared with some ideas in my head. Any ideas will be appreciated!

Basics...

Does it have good spark (does spark appear blue and jump a good gap?). If so, then on to fuel. Do you have good fuel from tank to carb inlet (disconnect line from carb inlet and check flow). If good there, then take out bowl drain and see if you get good flow there.

See if you have spark and fuel and go from there. Post back with results.

Yes and thanks-I'll be doing this. Learned from a guy named Dell about yer sparkies. Just want to be prepared for what damage could have been done by jumping a 6v with a 12v. Anyone ever made this mistake and will it burn something up such as points, condenser, etc?

a simple jumpstart will not harm points and condensor.

however.. if the machine had an EI on it.. the jumpstart likely killed the module.

need to know more.

what it will and won't do.

will it turn over?

have you looked under the distribuitor cap?

Just a follow up here. We charged the 6v with a 6v charger. Did a points, condenser, and plug tune up and she started up and ran fine. No damage was done and don't know the exact reason it didn't start. Could have been flooded. Happy camper!

if it floods again.. pluu and cleanthe plugs in carb cleaner, air dry and reinstall.

Another follow up. The same thing happened after we got it started the second time. It turns out, there was some crud in the gas tank. Also, after reading Bruce's info, we determined we turned on the gas valve full way (this allows bottom reserve gas to enter carb) and the screens were gone, thus, letting a little crud go into the carb. Symptoms were gas coming from carb inlet after removing the air filter hose. FYI

consistent with crud in the float valve
