I also have an FEL on my tractor and was still able to hang five suite case weights on it. The weights are not from Cub. I bought them off E-Bay used and they stick up higher than some 'low profile' ones I have seen. As a result they do interfere with the cost bar on the loader in the down position restricting how low I can lower the bucket. The amount of restriction is not great and I have not found that the weights bother my use of the loader since I can still lower it far enough to hit the ground when the bucket is level.

There are some low profile ones pictured in an E-Bay ad at SET OF 4 UNIVERSAL TRACTOR SUITCASE WEIGHTS 116# TOTAL - eBay (item 280465877610 end time Feb-25-10 12:39:05 PST) that might work better for you. Study the picture and the dimensions shown and you should get a better idea.

Now that I think about it I guess you could also add front weight easily by filling a 30 gallon drum with water and carry it in the loader for instant front weight. Some big rocks would work too. If you do that be sure to keep the loader low so that the tractor does not become tippy! Personally I use the bucket for my chain saws, tool box, fuel can, and splitting maul when I head to the woods.

Another thought.....

Are you running the R4 industrial bar tires that came on a lot of the 6284's? If so Ag tires would make a big difference for you as well.

I have the R4 tires on my 6284 and I think they are a good combination between reasonable traction in dirt and snow while not tearing up my lawn bad when I mow. Having said that, I can see how Ag tires would improve my traction in snow if I had them.

Changing to ag tires would be an expense and some work but could be cheaper than getting another tractor. It would be neat if you could find a set of used ones on wheels. Just remember that the front tire sizes are critical to match the rears by size ratio (not same size front to back) in order not to cause wear or damage to your transfer case.

Yep, I've got R4 tires.
I'm not real certain the ag tire setup would help or not. (expensive experiment ?)
Several hills on my drive are really steep. I've had it sliding so bad at times , I was unsure where I'd stop !
I don't really use my machine to mow anymore. I use it at times to mow around out bldgs. at our farm. For that, I have a 5' finish mower (3pt).
I used my BH quite alot after building our home in the woods, to clear some of the woods/stumps out. However, I didn't even put the hoe on last year. I've got a 3 pt. brush chipper that gets some use during Spring/storm clean up around the place.

That's why I think perhaps I may go a "different" direction with a tractor ?

I guess I've strayed from the tire/snowblower topic...

Thanks, Graybeard

If the tires are slipping on the hard pavement then you are probably correct that Ag tires would not improve things much. I was thinking in terms of surfaces where the tires can get a bite. I agree that the Ag tires would be an expensive experiment unless you could find a complete used set on wheels - I imagine tires and wheels from other brands of tractors will fit but I don't know that so you would need to check carefully before purchasing.

In your case it sounds like the only thing that might possibly help is chains or a much heavier 4 x 4 tractor and I don't think brand will have much bearing on it.

If your surfaces are really slippery I'm not sure that anything will make much difference if your machine can not get traction. Have you considered using a three point spreader with coarse sand? And I'd still try filling the FEL with a heavy load of something to see if the extra front weight improves your traction at all. Easy enough to try. If you filled the loader with sand you would have weight and something to spread around too.

If nothing else works perhaps you could lease your drive to the Olympic committee - it sounds like they could use an improved bobsled run.
