John Deere X540
Hi folks, I'm new here and have a question relating to interchangeability of mower decks. I have a John Deere 2009 X540 lawn tractor with a 54 inch edge cut deck. I may be upgrading to a 2011 X540 and I'm wondering if my 2009 deck will fit up properly. Does any body have any insight on the configuration?

It should fit but there has been some rolling changes on the decks. Most changes are related to the gauge wheels but there are some changes on lift arm p/n's and the deck shell itself. I would hit the jdpart cat and compare you s/n to the latest s/n options. That said are you saving that much money keeping your 2 year old deck and not getting the unit with a deck, probably worth comparing. Depending on what/where you are mowing the deck can be the first thing to wear out. Good Luck

I too would be curious as to why you appear to be thinking of keeping the old deck and just upgrading the tractor. Must be a reason to have the old tractor without its deck. As I say, just curious as the new tractor might cost more if it is ordered without a deck.

As a base unit the x540 can come less a deck so their could be some price advantages a certain # of folks don't put decks on these although it is more common on x700's to have just a blade, blower, etc.

I'm curious because we recently experienced historic floods where I live, and although I live up on a mountain safe from river flooding, the nearest Joh Deere dealer is near a river. Long story short my mower was in for some warranty service when our area took on severe flash flooding leaving all the machines in service under 4 feet of water oil and sewage. Did I mention I have only owned this mower for one month. Since I own a small pickup I can't fit the tractor and deck in the truck. So I'm left with a flooded tractor at the dealer and a slightly used deck at home. Such a bummer! I'm waiting for dealers adjuster to deliver the bad news, that being how much money I'm going to lose on this mower in just one month! So that explains my inquiry.

Makes sense now. But I'd be surprised if your Deere dealer doesn't fix you up with a good deal on a new tractor and new deck to go with it. Keep us posted. Floods are bummers to deal with.
