I have a 1994 Jd 6300, found out it is equipped for 540 rpm PTO only. The owners manual shows you can remove a snap ring and reverse the PTO shaft for 1000 rpm, but the dealer says not on mine. Bought a used Hardee ditchbank mower which needs 1000 rpm. Has anyone heard of a gear reduction (increaser) with approx. 2 to 1 ratio for this purpose (run 1000 rpm implement on 540 rpm tractor)?

Thanks, Richie

I checked my parts book and it looks as if both were avail.
540 alone or 540/1000. I've never seen a multiplyer to change the speed. Is the mower belt drive? Hydraulic or what?

It seems that all tractors are not created equal, when I called my local dealer, he informed me that my particular tractor was not equipped to change from 540 to 1000. The mower is a pto driven hydraulic pump which in turn drives a hydraulic motor on the 5 foot mower deck. This unit works horizontally as well as 90 degrees up or down, and anything in between. It also extends outward with a hydraulic cylinder/cable to a counter weight for balance.

How about swapping out the 1000RPM pump for a 540rpm one

I did check with the manufacturer about buying a 540 rpm pump to replace the 1000 rpm pump - - - - he gave me 980 ($980.00) reasons to look else where. Might have to jury rig some type of pully system if I can't find what I'm looking for. If there was a device just like a Prince pump with a 21 spline shaft sticking out below the 540 insert, it would be EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

How much flow do you need? The biggest prince was 21GPM

I'd think it would be easier to remove the old pump and route hoses to the new one that is tractor mounted. (Assuming it has enough flow). Than to rig some pulleys up

I did a google search on PTO 540 1000 conversion

This looks promising <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.westplains.com/newposthole.htm>westplains</A>

Just looked up the hardee mower, looks like you'd need more than the 21gpm.

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.buhler.com/sitefiles/fksblowers.htm>Buhler has a conversion kit for snowblowers</A> Might need some modification, but a local machine shop should be able to help you out.

hazmat
The pump has a 1 1/2 inch inlet and a 1 inch outlet, not sure about the gpm, but I'd guess it's probably at least double that 21 gpm figure. I sent an e-mail inquiry to West Plains, am awaiting their reply. Thanks for the referral. Are you with the F.D. ? I retired as a Capt. in 1992 from N.O.F.D.

Thanks, Richie

I was a volunteer fireman in college, the "hazmat" handle is the name my mother christend the family's boston whaler. I guess with 4 teenagers tooling around in it it really was hazerdous material.
