Has anyone had a jd 540 bucket cylinder rod break where it attaches to the bucket? Any idea if it can be welded. Otherwise has anyone found a compatible replacement cylinder assembly? Don't really want to pay 450 for the rod, or 1200 for the cylinder. Photo attached. Thanks for any help.

Try to find a welder to stick it back together. If it does not work then need to buy a rod. Good luck

Maybe the cylinder shop you used when you bought the 5210 tractor and had cylinders re-built?

Unfortunately they did a terrible job on them and I will not be using them again. They used the wrong seal kit from the get go, used pipe wrenches on the cylinders marring them, and the cylinders have had slow drips since they actually rebuilt them correctly. I was hoping someone had found a non-green drop in aftermarket replacement.

If that cylinder does not completely retract the rod into the cylinder,,,
I would put a piece of mechanical tube over the rod, and weld the mechanical tube to the rod and end block.
(I do not have much of a view with just that one pic,, please do not chew on me for my guess at help)

The added tube will cause the assembly to be 3X+ as strong as the rod/block alone. (if it fits,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, )

It would be back together in an hour,, cost minimal, and now,,, we would get to watch the OTHER cylinder,,,,,,,,,,,, o_O

I think cylinder attaching pins must be binding which flexes cylinder while rod is moving in/out of the barrel. If I'm correct about pins binding then free pin & lubricate then grind tapers on mating parts or utilize CADplan's repair suggestion & weld together.

I appreciate the suggestions. Unfortunately there is not much room on the rod to add a tube. Everything was greased and free. It's probably been on its way out for a while. I am going to try to match it up to an aftermarket cylinder before I spend the money replacing that rod and rebuilding the cylinder.

Check out Surplus Center for a similar fit.

Find a machine shop that specializes in cylinder rebuilds. There has to be one somewhere near you that can take stock rod and duplicate that one for less than $450.

I’ve replaced several cylinders on my JD 4600 with close fits from Magister Hydraulics. Some minor adjustments were needed, but now I can easily swap the cylinder on the future without paying JD $1500 for a replacement. That’s generally about what they get for them.

What was wrong with the cylinders that they needed replacement?
