JD 5400
Pto is working on my 5400, but it is screaming at a high pitch tone (sounds like a bearing). Tractor shifts fine on all normal gears and pto engages and disengages fine, fluid is clean and at proper levels. The factor that may help narrow the problem down is when the pto was shut off and we were actually disengaging the implement off the pto shaft (so the shaft was not still turning), whatever was still turning in the tractor's transmission after the tractor was shut off, still had the squeal noise, just not at the higher rpm tone. This does not happen when tractor is shut off and pto was not used. Another problem that may or may not be related is I can't get it out of 4 wheel drive either. Any clues on what needs replaced? Also any cost estimates would be nice to know, although most likely very depressing as I am guessing it will need to be split.
Thanks!

I think that your "preliminary diagnosis" may be a correct one... - splitting the tractor.

Sounds like it might be the either the clutch throw-out bearing or a carrier bearing on the main input shaft for the transmission is deciding to quit going around in circles; at least without complaining!

Either one will require that the tractor will need to be split.

Does the squeal change at all depending on what you do with the clutch pedal? Even when the tractor is just ideling. When the clutch is fully depressed the noise should subside when the clutch is pushed down - if the throw-our bearing is failing.

If it's a carrier bearing in the transmission - messing with the clutch is not gonna change the sound a whole lot.

Maybe TxJim and jd110 will chime in here and offer a more detailed hypothesis.

Since it continued to make noise at a lower pitch while it coasted to a stop, I suspect the pto throw-out bearing. As Akfish says, the tractor needs to be split to repair. It probably would be a good time to replace the clutch while it is apart.

I agree with jd110 although I have very limited experience with 5000 series utilities as I had already left the JD dealership before they started were introduced.

Thanks guys for all your help! Backing up released the 4WD, so thanks for that tidbit also.
I depressed the clutch while the pto was engaged at low rpm and high rpm and heard little difference in the noise....a very slight drop off, but it was still present. It is also not near as loud as it is with an implement on it which makes sense since that would produce much more drag/resistance.
Again thanks a lot. I will now go cry into my checkbook
