5400 question

My 5400 has, all of a sudden, started losing power. I was moving some dirt today and realized that the rpm's weren't where I needed. I reached to adjust the throttle up and it was all the way up but I was only getting 2000-2100 rpm's. I dropped it down to let it idle and it died. I could not get it to start back with the throttle all the way at "turtle" but it would fire right up a little higher. Ran it back up to the "rabbit" and it went to about 2400-2500 rpm for a couple of minutes but dropped back down to the 2000-2100 range. I dropped it to turtle and it died again. Started it up again to make sure it would start and went ahead and called it a day. Any ideas?

Check your throttle cable under the hood,, sound like your set screw has backed off a little.. happen to me about once a year.. Lou

Do the easy things... Check your air & fuel filters

Since you get high rpms briefly and then they drop off, it sounds like you have restricted fuel flow from dirt or debris in tank, a clogged fuel filter, a suction leak in the fuel line, or possibly a bad injection pump. I would recommend replacing the fuel hose from the tank to the filter. I have seen lots of these hoses get cracks and suck air into the fuel line without leaking fuel externally. While the line is off, make sure you are getting unrestricted flow from the tank.

Since I just finished the yearly clean out of my chicken houses, clogs are a definite possibility. Was already planning on doing an oil change in the morning, so i will scoot to the JD dealership and grab a new air filter and fuel filter to start eliminating things. Thanks.
