540rpm Snowblower at 1100rpm

My Yanmar has 2 speed PTO, 540 and 1000rpm. So naturally I've tried the 1000rpm speed on a 540rpm rear mount blower and it worked just fine. I'd statically balanced my impeller on my Puma and it ran smooth as silk. Most front mount blowers run around 1000rpm. I've adapted a JD 47" blower to the front of my yanmar now. The reduction chain drive on a Deere blower reduces the 2100rpm mid-pto speed down to around 950rpm. I removed that chain reduction and I run it straight at 1000rpm off the rear PTO through a custom under-slung drive shaft, works great. 1000rpm is not that fast as ran as rotating machinery goes. You can try it out and always add a chain reduction on like Dave shows.

Hello JCByrd24,

I have the same 47 inch JD blower I THINK but its on my LA115 with the plastic chute
and spout with the wonderful $140 dollar JD belts that I do not buy anymore.

I wish it was a single stage all metal unit.

The biggest mistake they made was eliminating the single stage snow caster and
the horizontal shaft engine mounts.

All I can say is )(*&^%$#$%^&*()_+ junk

Just an observation but have noticed that quite a few front blowers actually use walk behind style gear boxes and those seem somewhat fragile for ride on tractors.

Ignoring for the moment that the snowblower may self destruct eventually at the higher speed, consider that it takes about 4 times the power to do the same job at 1000 rpm than at 540 rpm. We inadvertently ran a 108 inch blower at 1000 rpm with a 110hp tractor and the amount of power required to move 10 inches of snow was such that there wasn't a reverse gear slow enough to do it without continually using the clutch.

I think the experience you had backs up my continuing posts that the further you want your blower to throw the snow, the smaller volume you can move with the tractor HP remaining the same.

With your 1,000 rpm pto and no rpm reduction at the blower, the fan, now turning at 1,000 rpm's, was throwing the snow much further and in doing so used up the pto hp so you could only move less snow through the blower.

Those people who are trying add-ons such as fan blade wipers to eliminate any clearance between the fan and fan housing, think they are making a big improvement not understanding the basic physics involved. There is no free lunch when it comes to machinery and operating speed.
