Trying to determine the wire color (or pin number) for the wire from the instrument cluster harness connector leading to the fuel tank sender. Anyone have a diagram matching a 5420 straddle mount, early serial number tractor who might care to share?

Not sure if it's the same; for the 5410 there are two wires to the cluster, a black #010 in connector X12 cavity D (ground) and an orange #353 in connector X12 cavity C (to fuel gauge). Connector X12 is a 12 cavity connector, two rows of six cavities, that connects to the instrument cluster. Power feeds the cluster with a red wire #072 in connector X12 cavity A.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, but that doesn't sound like what I see on this tractor. There are two harness connectors, one six pin and one ten pin. I just installed what was sold as the correct replacement cluster(RE232258) which came with three receptacles. Two that matched the original, and one more, probably twelve or fourteen pin for which there is no harness to attach. It came with a dummy plug of sorts with instructions to install it in the third port for tractors without a matching harness connector. According to the instruction booklet this should fit a number of 5100, 5200, 5400 and 5500 tractors(including the 5410). All the other warning lights and gauges now seem to be working. "Flashing" the sender wire to ground has no effect on the gauge at this point, so I need to confirm continuity between the sender and the cluster. Access to sender is limited right now with seat back being right up against it, with slides and mounting bolts all rusted solid.

It's possible, I miss counted the cavities in the connector. It could be a ten cavity, two rows of five. Especially since you say the cluster will also fit the 5410.
Did you find the wires mentioned in your ten cavity connector? Top row, looking at the wires side, the letters are right to left.

Actually, I haven't been back out to the tractor since my first post. Thirty mile drive, so I'm hoping to be fairly confident in what to look for when I go back. You think it's an orange wire on pin C, probably the ten pin harness?

Yes, orange wire, if marked with a number, 353

PM sent. Seems the site doesn't support the PM feature very well. What ever happened to Email notifications?
