Sadly my 5420 has been diagnosed with a bad injector pump and it is literally across the creek making it impossible to take to the local mechanics shop or a dealership, I'm left to remove the injector pump myself. I want to be sure to do this correctly, thus far I've taken the fuel lines and solenoids off, then removed the front plate and the 15/16 nut and expected the pump to slide out of the rear of the housing but it seems stuck. Have I over looked something or can I place the nut on the end of the shaft and tap it loose? Also, if someone could please advise on whether there are timing marks that I should be aware of I would greatly appreciate it. Super forum by the way, I've gotten great information here by reading threads in the past.

I'm not very knowledgeable on newer JD tractors but on the older ones one needs to put engine on #1 TDC before inj pump is removed. I'm guessing gear(parts key 10) needs to be loosened from shaft to remove the pump. What was engine doing/not doing for diagnoses of a bad inj pump? How many hrs are on speed hour meter?

Correct for the db4 pumps with shaft lock timing (small lock on side of flange with screw that tightens down). For all db2 pumps and some db4 pumps there was not shaft lock timing and a scribe on pump flange and engine was used if these marks are not there you need to make them before you remove. Of course front cover removed and gear pulled for either application as db2&4 pumps have a retained drive shaft. A puller would be the best method to get the gear loose.

Tx Jim The 5420 has about 4800 hours. It began spitting and sputtering, not really a constant skip though. I started with the fuel filter, then replaced the inline screen that is half way back to the tank. No better, but had a little fuel at the injectors. So then I replaced all the low pressure line between the tank to the filter housing thinking it was sucking air somewhere. Still no help, so I replaced the o-ring in the filter housing and checked all my high pressure connections. Through these steps sometimes the tractor would not start without starting fuel for 10 seconds or so. At this point I created a 5 gallon can of fuel and ran a line from it to the filter, if the can was at the level of the regular tank the tractor ran rough but if I held the can high above the level of the injector pump it would run better. I figured the pump was not sucking fuel properly so I removed it to have it tested.

is there a transfer pump to check first? Or gravity, looks like it should have a transfer pump.

All I found in 5420 PC is a primer pump but no lift(transfer) pump.

The bosch on t he Deutz I use to work on the primer was build into the lift pump. It was just a lever on the side of the diaphragm pump.
