Besides the poorly designed fuel system, is anyone else aware of any major issues with this model? Pros and cons? I think this would be perfect for starting my small scale hay operation. Would like to be able to pull a smaller plow and disc to. Anyone do any soil work with them? Thanks in advance guys. Luke

i have a 5510 and use a couple of 5410's i would say it is a good fuel system from the pump to the injectors.they need a electric lift pump when added that solves the problem.our tractors have from 3500 to 5000 hrs with few problems.i have seen some other 5000 series with over 15000 hrs on the original motor.they are 4 wheel drive i have been amazed by how much them little tractors will do.if you are going to move dirt they need more weight.i have the cast wheels plus weights.the power reverser ,wet clutch,is a useful addition.one thing i do not like is the dry pto clutch.but the 5510 one lasted 3000 hrs.to me these tractors are ideal for a haying operation.i like the 4 cylinder motor,it makes the tractor longer. jd parts support is the best.my jd ag dealer stocks a lot of parts plus can get most others by 7:00 in the morning no extra charge.i believe there is a difference between jd ag dealers and homeowner dealers.i have several different brands of tractors.if i had only one it would be a jd.

Thanks cowski! You have any idea how much wheel weights are goin for? I supposes Hangin weights off the front would help too.

deere recommends 2 weights per side.if you are breaking ground ,it is hard to keep the front end on the ground.front weights are needed.look on john deeres site for pricing.

I have posted numerous thoughts about my 5420. I think it is about perfect for a small operation, especially haying. It is more than sufficient for small plowing & discing jobs.

No significant issues with mine.

I've not had any problems with my 5420. I put dihydrogen oxide in the rear tires for ballast...

There are plenty of these out there with really high hours. I would think this would be a decent indicator. We've had minimal problems and our stock fuel system is still working fine. I have had to replace the fuel line from the tank to the fuel filter/manual pump.

It would make a great haying tractor but I think its a bit low on hp for a 5' wide round baler. Better with a 4 footer.

So what's the deal here - should I be watching for a problem? My 2003 5420MWFD with 1500 hours was bought new by my FIL and I'm not aware of any fuel issues.

There has been a fair amount of 20 series utility tractors that have had issues with the transfer pump as well as the metric cloth braided hose typically needed replacement throughout the tractor.
