I had my 5455 in the shop last week for a faulty A/C evaporator. A neighbor was discussing with me a church wed. night how much of a price jump new JD's and CaseIH's have taken, so when I picked up my tractor today I asked about the new 5455's on the lot. With a FEL they have gone up 11 grand over what I paid last June. That price was up 2 grand from the previous October. Mine is a 2007, I believe, but was told when I bought it that it was a 2008, but it does not have the new style hood.:( The new tractors are either '08 or '09's. The only real difference I noticed beside the different hood from mine was the tires. The are not putting Michelins on them anymore and have gone to Titan radials and are using larger tires.
Mine has 16.9R34's on the rear and 13.6R24's on the front. The new models have 380/85R28(14.9-28) on the front and 480/80R38(18.4-38) on the rear. The tractors seem to have a better ground clearance with these tires and the rear fenders are full. There is a pretty good gap on mine between the tire and the fender.
The dealer offered to take my tractor back in trade for anything on the lot for my full purchase price:rolleyes:. I really would like to have had the 5460 instead of the 5455, but just don't want to pay that kind of difference.

Don't the 08's have tier three engines while the 07's do not? Otherwise, what are you reasons for wanting to go with the 5460. The extra HP?

Just a little more power on the hills would be the only reason to change. I hadn't thought of the tier three rating on the engine. The exhaust stack was also different on the new ones on the lot from mine. They had very slick 5455 about 3 years old with 700+ hrs on it in being serviced. He was seriousily thinking of trading it for a 5465.

Ok, makes sense. I guess there's also the cylinder count to keep in mind as well. I can never remember which models in the 5400 are 6 cylinders vs. 4 cylinders. I saw a test between one 6 cylinder and one 4 cylinder pulling ground engaging implements. The only thing that stood out was that the 4 cylinder 5400 could make sharper/quicker headland turns.

The 5455 and the 5460 are both 4 cyl engines. The 5460 is just producing 10 more pto hp out of the same engine displacement. The 5465 is the smallest 6 cyl. and makes a 12" jump in wheelbase. It is sure an impressive looking tractor and I would think a smoother riding tractor with the longer wheelbase. I really don't have a need for that much hp though. My tractor is more than enough for my baler and is enough even if I decide to step up to a larger one.

I'd love to have a 5400 Series but I'm in a similar position as you are . . . I don't need that much power vs. overall size. If I buy a second tractor I have to find a balance of hp/size/cost. I need something that can do everything I need while making sense being used periodically around my smaller property. In other words, it has to be able to mow/square/round bale but if I decide to hook up my 7ft. grass cutter and mow my pastures I won't look like an idiot mowing 5 acres with a full size unit. Further more I need to be able to haul it and as many implements (in combination) while staying under the "F350/3500 class" weight limits. If I was buying now it would be the MF3645 without a doubt . . . 91gross hp/75pto hp.

I do like the 5400 series. Wish they had a dealer closer to me... would love to have tried out a 5425 before I bought my JD 5425. I'm thinking the MF transmission would be pretty sweet. :D
