55\" Tiller?

Dealer wants $2,100 for a 55" John Deere tiller. I think there are less expensive non-Deere tillers out there...but what do you recommend for a good brand? Assuming John Deere makes a good quality tiller, I assume the others will be less expensive, and also be slightly less in quality/durability?

I like Land pride my self. I own a lot of there equipment. Pricer than some, but soild. Compare weights of equipment. dollor per LB is a good way to compare.

Re: 55\" Tiller?

The Howse RTC-70 70" tiller is all gear drive and weighs about 820 lbs. I bought one about six months ago and surprisingly the price from my MF dealer was about $200 less than the price on the Howse web site. I've been pleased with my selection but I'm sure there are others out there that will do as well.

I paid about half that amount for my King Kutter 60" tiller and it works and tills very well. Been using it for 5 years now with 0 problems .
All gear drive
6 tines per flange
690 pounds

Re: 55\" Tiller?

I bought a 72" Gearmore all gear E series for 1800$ in CA in sept you can do better. someone else makes that for JD, so your paying more than if you cut them out. if you search tillers on tbn you can find out who makes it. i just read a post yesterday by CCI running down who makes what. good luck

Very happy with my 10 year old LandPride with NO problems (shouldn't have said that). Don't know the current pricing info though.

Re: 55\" Tiller?

Well I talked to grandpa about the tiller. He's the one wanting it and paying for it. He's going to get the JD tiller. I told him about the less expensive model and he knows about them...but he thinks the JD model will be the superior unit over time. And so since he thinks it's best to buy the best you can afford, that's what he's gonna do. Oh well...at least the paint will match on most of the items we'll have now /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Mostly green.

Re: 55\" Tiller?

Just went to a landscape show the last couple of days and talked about this very topic on the trip. We have Befco, Kioti, Deere, and King Kutter in the stable. I read your post that you were going to go with the JD. If you have the funds, I will not talk you out of it. I will tell you our story. When we were looking to purchase a tiller for our Deere tractors, we were told not to go cheap and were ready to spend the money on a Befco when we discovered the King Kutters. They were the cheapest we found. We were worried about durability. A fella that we knew bought a tiller out of Northern Tool and twisted and broke the shafts on it twice while doing normal tilling. We decided that for the money we would give it a try and if it wasn't good, learn from our mistake. We have put our King Kutters through some tough tasks and not had a bit of troubles. We bought another one and one of the fellas that told us "don't go cheap" got one as well. We have not had any major trouble with any of the tillers that we own, but have not been disappointed with the KKs as well.
