i did a stupid thing when i tried to jump off my tractor. i hooked up the cables incorrectly. there was a tiny spark when i hooked up the last cable. now the tractor is completely dead. not even a whimper. i figure i blew a fuse somewhere but i can't locate it. the fuse box to the lower left of the steering column is okay. are there other fuses somewhere that would kill the starter?

i see in the manual there is a 30amp fuse to the starter switch. i wonder if that is what i blew and also where is it located.

I don't do the bigger machines much but usually right by the starter there is whats called a slow blow fuse and most times it is wrapped in black electrical tape.
It is usually pink or a light green fuse that does not look like a regular fuse.
If you have no luck I will find it and post it tomorrow.

i followed the black conduit coming from the starter and didn't see any obvious bulge indicating a fuse. is it within the conduit itself. there is a plastic shield over the starter and that is keeping me from seeing everything. it is raining here so i won't be able to remove it till tomorrow.

unable to locate that 30amp fuse with a flashlight and i think it may be in the firewall??? just grasping for straws right now. i will need my tractor tomorrow to get a riding mower out of the back of my truck.

Have you checked your battery and the battery posts for good connection? My first question was the tractor running when you tried the jump, because I have a hard time seeing how you could blow a fuse in a staring circuit just by hook jumper cables up wrong to the battery, until you turn the key the cranking system is just an open circuit. So unless there's more to your story I'd be looking at the battery because it sounds more likely that you have a shorted cell in the battery.

no sergei i did not turn the key. but if the battery had a dead cell wouldn't it still jump from another battery? i really don't know, just asking.

i first tried to start it from it's own battery. the starter would click but not turn over. i have had trouble with this battery for awhile but it will sometimes start in warm weather after the sun has been on it all day. anyway after it wouldn't start that is when i pulled out my portable battery with a full charge and hooked it up backwards. there was a spark on the positive terminal. so i checked and found my mistake and hooked it up properly. then when i tried to start it the starter would not even click.

wait a minute while i go out and see if any of the lights will work................

okay no lights, nothing. everything is cold and dead. upon reflection it is possible i had the ignition turned on (accessory) when i connected the jump.

Ground a test light to the tractor frame near the starter, and them touch the main terminal from the battery at the starter solonoid. If you have a good bright light then you should have good battery connections to the starter and if not clean all battery connections.
IMPORTANT!!!!! Make sure all the tractor shifters are in neutral, the brakes are locked and the ignition switch is in the off position. Then if you know how, try jumping the the starter solonoid with a screw driver. The tractor should turn over and if so you know the problem is in the your starter switch, safety switch area. By the way did you make sure the shifters are in neutral, the PTO lever is in the off position and also check to see if the lights work. Just a few ideas to help yoou track it down.

I'd take the battery down to an auto store and have them test it, and no if it has a bad cell it most likely will not take a charge. I've seen batteries that look good and take a charge , but the minute you hit the switch the battery will short out. HOW OLD IS THIS BATTERY, IF MORE THAN 3 YEARS GET A NEW ONE!

the battery will be two years old in july but it has been weak for over a year. i will take it to autozone when i am in town. i figure i need a new battery regardless. hope that is the problem.

eight bolts to get the battery out not counting removing the front. how many was that, five more? geez, who designed this thing?

problem solved.

it was the thirty amp fuse i mentioned earlier. i called my dealer when he came in and he told me where to find it. sure enough it is blown. he said that fuse is there to protect the circuitry from exactly what i did.

my dealer is abbey farm supply in saltillo mississippi. i have really been pleased with him and his prices.

thanks for all of your replies!!
