Welcome to TBN:D

Generally, re-sealing a cylinder is fairly easy. Boom cylinders on backhoes are a challenge because they are big and heavy, and the nut that hold the piston to the rod is often torqued at hundreds of ft/lbs.

If you post some pictures of the cylinder we can better advise how to get it apart, some have snap-rings, some have retaining wires, some have screwed on glands...just a lot of options.

Depending on the serial number of your machine and the part number of the cylinder, you may be looking at replacing the piston and gland if you want to use OEM parts. A good hydraulics shop may be able to match the seals used in your gland and piston if NH has obsoleted them. There is a lengthy service bulletin that gives pretty good info about this.

555eNH,

If you're going to DIY make sure you have a decent vise to be safe....the bolt (or nut-dependeing on which cyl) on the end of the rod is torqued pretty good...take apart and visit your dealer or hyd shop to match....the NH's cyls are metric sizes and prepackaged kits are the best way to go....they are pretty straight forward and make sure you loctite and torque back the same....Good Luck:)
