i am considering buying a john deere in the 55 hp range.
i looked on their web site and saw that the 5203 model is no
longer available, that it has been replaced by the 5055.
can anyone inform me of the differences between the 2 models,
and why jd did away with the 5203. Also, has the engine on the 5055

Does it have to be a 5000 series? The 4520 has 60 hp...

They are in the "middle" of the change and there are plenty of 5203's left, just do a little calling around, we have several left. Changes on the new model are minimal...

you can no longer order a 5203 but you should be able to find one with no trouble on a dealers lot. might i add, at a good price too! i did. when the change was mentioned i decided to really "hit the books" and study up as much as i could on the new "replacement" for the 5003 series and here's what i learned. they tweaked the hp down about 1-2 hp on most all models(not sure why but they did it). youd never notice it though. the biggest change i can find on the new series is the hood is now a one piece instead of a hood with removable side panels. i prefer the older hood myself as i find it easier to get to things on the engine then i did with the one piece hood. the one piece does look more "revolutionary" though. also the rims are solid yellow now instead of green center paint. small things i noticed different were the owners manual holder is now located on the fender instead of on the ROPS and the rear tire fenders look slightly different. basically these new models are the SAME tractors as the 5003 series, just different numbering and cosmetic changes. i just couldnt see spending the extra 5% price increase for a few cosmetic changes so i went with a 5203.

More money for more options--5225 is mid 50 hp also. Saw one on dealer's lot last week.

Have seen quite a few of the 03's, mostly 5203, on lots in West and West Central Texas. Didn't check on the price since I am not in the market any longer. Have a 5203 in 2WD with the crash box tranny and a 5325, 4WD and 12X12 power reverser. I still like the 5203--it served its purpose, but no comparison between those two machines. Big jump in price.

And the new "5000M" series are even higher than your 5X25 series.
