Ford 5900 & 5610
Hello folks, & Ford tractor mechanics, I have a 5610 tractor with alternator & battery problems the alternator is not charging for sure but I was taking the battery off and found a sensor of some kind that the wires were broken going to it. The wires were on some sort of sensor that is on the side of the battery tray, what is this sensor for & could it possibly keep the alternator from charging? This tractor has some age on it but doesn't have but 1000 hrs. Thanks in advance

Hi, cant't help you specifically but noticed the same sensor on our 6700, am yet to mind out what it's for, ours was disconnected and has been since we got it 20 years ago! Doesn't appear to have made any difference. We also had charging problems a few years back, I eventually found it to be the alternator was stuffed, the bearings had worn on one side so it wasn't turn straight anymore and had actually contacted the pickup field. Which was all due to a badly made bracket the previous owner had put on which wasn't square so the belt was pulling at the wrong angle! Anyway waked a new alternator on AUD$80 later and made a new bracket and all has been good since.

Don't know about yours specifically but there is not to much interns of "electronics" on them, so I'd start by checking all your connectors/ terminals on the alternator & starter & battery and good and clean if you can easily follow the harness checking for any damage or rub points, and if that all looks good it might be the alternator.

I'm presuming of course you've checked / replaced the drive belt, & tested for voltage change (should rise to above 13volts once engine is running) at the alternator / battery?

That sensor senses the battery temperature and biases the charging current based on battery electrolyte temperature. It needs to have continuity for the charging system to work. I thnk these tractors use Lucas ("Prince of Darkness") electrics.

You learn something new every day!
Amazing how these things change from country to country! We have buckets loads of Fords over here and service them, and even the Boss (40yr's being a Ag Mechanic) had never seen one, We were even the local Ford Dealer back in the day!

Where would we be without TBN!

When I try to diagnose a problem, I'm using one brain (on a good day at least!).
When you get on these forums, there are lots of brains to help solve the problem. The hardest thing to do is to get a good definition of the problem from the OP! The better the definition, the quicker the right answer(s).
