Yep, the lawn tractor is a JD X590 and indeed it is air cooled.
I rechecked everything again this morning....air filter, fuel filter, the oil level and what I could see around the fan without removing the shroud. Much to my surprise, I found the oil level to be close to the ADD oil level but still in the "safe" range. I carefully filled to the FULL mark. After doing all of this, when I started the engine the Malfunction Indicator did not come on. However, I still waited for all of the dash indicators to settle down. I should add that when the Engine Malfunction Indicator came on and started flashing, neither the Caution Indicator nor the STOP Indicator came on. That should be a good sign, right?
When I had the X590 worked on after the mouse incident, The service manager told me that everything checked out and appeared to be OK...wiring, no apparent overheating, etc. He also said that on the X590 (and smaller lawn tractors) they cannot check for codes. However, they can check for codes on the JD 700 series.
My dealer's service manager was not working today, nor was the small engine tech. I'll have to call on Monday if the problem still exists. It may have been the oil level so I'll check it again this evening.
I am still very open for suggestions.
Guess I should have bought a carbureted X580...no stinkin' Engine Malfunction Indicator.
