Hi group,
I'm looking at an equipment trailer, and could use some help putting a value on it.

Here's the specs- 1992 Cross Country 4HD16, 9700# CGVW, two axle, drum brakes on one axle only. Pintle hitch. Deck is seven foot wide, with a total lenght of eighteen feet. I think they must spec it as a sixteen based on the stored position of the ramps. Although the unit could use a paint job, it's in relatively good physical shape.

What it needs- Full set of lights and a battery kit for the brakes, A minor repair of the tongue jack. Could use a tire replaced due to several sidewall cracks.

Now the odd part- Tires are clearly not original with the size being 7x14.5 LRE (10 ply)
The tires are rated at around 1800 lbs @ 70 PSI max inflation, meaning we've got a 5 ton rig with 3.5 ton tires. Tires should have been 14 ply (LRG max load 3k+)

I've got a Deere 4120 with a 448 hoe, which would pretty much max out the present rubber. I can forget about loading on anything else.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Jon

In Dec, '03 for $2560 I bought a 4HD16. GVWR 9750# Load 8000#. Tires front + rear 7-14.5LT tubeless Load Range F DOT7FMK S 2300 D 2020. Inflation 100 psi.
I measured the bed @ 16'x78". Electric brakes both axles. Re-charging break-a-way kit by Buffalo Switchworks Model 96927 phone 800-862-4032. 2" hemlock planks show no rot. Cross Country Mfg.' Inc. is in Greene, NY , (maybe not too far) phone 607-656-4103.
I was told by the dealer in CT that anything bigger such as 5HD16 requires a Class II License so I bought 4HD. I have around 6000# of tractor + equip. so I'm ok so far.
Anyone know what the S stands for in S 2300, the D, the 7FMK, the LT in 14.5LTor the 12PR on the tires?
What's a good trailer tire with higher load capacity?

The s is for single tire rating and corresponds with the D which is when used in a Dual Tire configuration

The LT stands for light Truck

I believe that actually an D rated trailer tire (ST for special trailer I believe) actually has more load capacity then an E LT tire.

LT might mean light trailer in this case.

12PR is 12 ply rating of the tire.

Load range F is the weight rating of the tire. The higher the letter the more weight it can handle.

Looks like someone replaced the tires on the trailer Jon is looking at with a lower weight rated tire.

Since the 1992 trailer needs new lights, paint, a battery kit, tongue jack repair or replacement, and it needs a new set of the proper tires to bring it back up to the weight rating (about $650-850) and it's over 14 years old may need new brakes as well. If I was going to sink about a grand in parts into this used trailer I'd put the price between $1000-1300 max.

That's my opinion which along with $1.00 will get you a coffee in most places.

Thanks, guys.

I figuerd to spend in the area of $600 to bring it up to snuff, not including the paint. (The tractor doesn't care about the trailers' paint but *I* do...)

I don't know the price of a new 4HD 16, but I figure that I could purchase something comparable in a lesser brand for <$2.5k. Keeping in mind that I see intact used trailers selling in the $1000-$1500 range , I offered $500 for it. Needless to say, i haven't heard back from the owner yet. Hey, I can always offer more...

It's been sitting, and overgrown with weeds. It can surely sit and be covered in snow.

FWIW- Concerning the tires. Seems like LRG might be overkill, but a 8-14.5 LRF could also work well. I think the extra plies cost more than the added width.
I tend to prefer a little margin of safety though in matters like this rather than push it to the limit.

I'll let you all know if there's a happy ending.

Jon
