I was about to drain and replace the gear box oil prior to storing the mower for the winter following instructions in the Owner's Manual when I noticed the depiction of the gear box in the manual is 180 degrees opposite from that on my mower, i.e. check and drain plugs on the mower are on the left side (not as depicted in the manual) of the gear box and filler plug is on the right (not as depicted in the manual) and are directly above and within <1/2 inch of the belt.

The mower operates perfectly so I assume the gear box is mounted correctly.

The difficulty anticipated in draining the oil is to determine an effective method to prevent any of the draining oil from fouling the belt as the manual indicates oil should be drained on a level surface.

Wrapping the belt with a rag covered by an additional wrap with a plastic trash bag comes to mind but the <1/2 inch gap provides minimal space and no certainty it will work as envisioned.

$50.00-$100.00 for an oil extractor is out of the question for a tool used once per 150 hours of mowing time.

Lifting the mower and propping/standing it on the left (as viewed from above the mower), while possible with assistance, appears the least desireable alternative.

Am I overlooking the obvious? Is there an easier, simpler solution to draining the gear box oil? Do relatively small amounts of gear box oil on the belt render the belt unusable?

Welcome to the club of trying to figure this one out. I also posted the same type of question back at my 50 hour service of the MMM. I received many different replies and finally decided on the quart baggie under the drain hole. This didn't work very well for me as I couldn't get a good seal under the hole. Some oil spilled onto my belt and I plugged the hole back up as fast as I could.

I went to Sears and bought a manual extractor that only cost $15. After about 10 minutes of pumping, I had all of the oil extracted. When it's time to change the gear oil again, I think I will prop the MMM on one of my fences and let the oil drain into a pan.

I decided to change my gear oil also, though it probably doesn't have enough hours to warrant it. My gear box is also not like the manual states. The oil started coming out slowwwwwly and didn't seem like it needed to be changed so I quickly plugged it back and put some fresh oil in. I didn't even know an oil extractor existed. Now that I know, I won't have to bother my farmer friends yet again for my little tractor.

The correct terminology for the oil extractor is suction gun.Looks almost like a grease gun with about a one foot hose.Handy and inexpensive-don't use one a lot but nice to have.

The manual extractor that I was referring to is actually called a Gas & Oil Siphon System. I couldn't find it on Sears website but I did find it on Ace Hardware's site. ARNOLD 490-900-0002 GAS & OIL SIPHON SYSTEM.

If may be cheap but it worked for what I bought it for.

That's amazing! I would think it would work great for gas and oil, but it actually pulled the thick gear oil too? Wow.....I may have to get one of these for my spring lube change.

Thanks for the great info.........

Just to clarify on how well the siphon worked, I did have to keep pumping to get the gear oil out. The siphoning affect didn't work well but since there isn't that much gear oil in the box, it didn't take very long.

I snared a mixing bowl lid my wife was throwing away, it had a 1/2" lip on it so it fit right under the gearbox and on top of the belt. Not a drop on the belt. I do think I will tip the deck up some next time, just in case.
