I have a new to me John Deere 6000 watt Yanmar diesel (L100V) Old owner said it hasn稚 run for years, it needed new motor mounts and a new ignition switch. The generator is basically new it only has 4 hours on it but I can稚 get it to start.

I dumped the old diesel, verified fuel at the pump, up the line to the injector and I have seen a 5 pattern 杜ist spray from the injector. So I feel that I知 getting fuel into the cylinder.

It痴 electric start so this is what I am doing.

1. Engage the decompress
2. Turn the starter
3. Engine spins fast
4. Decompress disengages automatically
5. High compression stops the starter instantly

I have repeatedly tried different scenarios even holding the decompress lever down longer to get more rpms but nothing.

Only thing I can think of is timing is out??? But why? Is it possible the injector is to deep in the hole causing a clog?

Thoughts?

I have a 3.7 Yanmar for portable use. That thing turns over easy on decompression and then springs to life instantly upon release.
Sorry, had to re-read your post. Thinking . . . . .

Any sign or puff of smoke, indicating some ignition?

These things are nasty, noisy, stinky but in my experience VERY reliable. Mine starts every time, regardless of cold temperature. VERY frugal on fuel.

You do need good speed to get them going. I never put the pull starter back on mine considering it a bad joke!

If it was me. I might try carefully heating the head with a torch or putting a heat gun into the air intake. If it has compression, speed and fuel, it MUST start

You said you saw fuel at the injector. You did put the fuel lever to on, right? Mine shuts off by key (solenoid) but you have to put it back on by hand, along with decompression.

I have friends with a 6 coupled to a Northern Alternator. That engine is also a very reliable starting set, can't say the same for the (junk) Alternator!

Well I got it going but I can only start it with the pull start. I have a 700cca battery hooked up from my car and it won稚 turn the diesel fast enough I guess.

The battery tests good cables are 1/0 copper and new. Starter has 4 hrs on it I assume because of the hour meter.

What next?

Faulty starter or not enough amps getting to it...

Simple things.

Get a voltmeter and measure voltage on the starter motor wire at the starter to the starter frame.

That will show voltage at starter and if drops a bunch move either lead towards battery.

Ground first then hot.

If you find a spot where voltage drops a lot less then you have found a bad part or connection.

Next item is many small engine starters have dual windings in parallel to increase torque.

Sometimes one brush sticks reducing power by 1/2.
